I'm confused between the Kia Seltos HTE and the Tata Sierra Pure. I want a petrol manual. My running will be around 1,000 km per month, including both city and highway driving. Please suggest which would be the better car for me between the two.

It suits your low monthly use, is easy to drive every day, and it'll feel like a huge step up from your Swift in space, comfort and modernity. The Tata Harrier and Tata Sierra are larger and heavier cars, and their 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine isn't likely to be as fuel-efficient as the Kia either. Also, while they're wider, which makes them more suited to ferry three adults abreast in the back, for everyday use, these could feel relatively more cumbersome to drive and park in the city. For your use and budget, the Seltos NA petrol seems ideal. You could also consider the CVT automatic version for a smoother, more effortless drive.

Your booked Kia Seltos HTX automatic is actually a sensible choice for your usage. With 80 percent city driving and occasional highway use, the Seltos petrol automatic fits well because it is spacious, comfortable, easy to drive in traffic and feels premium enough for the money. Unless you specifically want maximum fuel efficiency, there is no obvious reason to cancel that booking.On the second question, the current geopolitical tension and crude price concerns should not push you into a panic decision. Yes, India has been urging fuel conservation due to global supply uncertainty, and the government is continuing its push toward alternative fuels and electrification. But that does not mean petrol cars suddenly become bad buys this year. Petrol and hybrid cars sold today will remain usable and supported for years.The more practical decision is based on your usage. If you cannot charge at home reliably, stay with petrol or a hybrid. EV ownership without dependable home charging still needs compromise.If your usage is mostly city and you want lower running costs, a strong hybrid like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris / Grand Vitara hybrid makes a lot of sense because you get much better fuel efficiency without EV charging dependency. For your usage, we would not switch to an EV purely because of ethanol blending worries. With 12,000 to 13,000 km a year, 60 per cent city use and a 10-year ownership plan, a petrol SUV like the Kia Seltos is still a perfectly practical choice. E20-compliant petrol cars will continue to be supported, and a move to higher ethanol blends like E85 would require dedicated flex fuel engines, so there is no realistic scenario where today’s compliant petrol cars suddenly become unusable.If you genuinely want to move to an EV, then the decision should be based on your usage pattern, charging convenience and ownership comfort, not fuel policy anxiety. Between your options, the Tata Harrier EV looks like the most complete fit today. It gives you the space you need for four adults and a child, feels like a proper family SUV and removes the uncertainty of waiting for an unlaunched product. The Mahindra XEV 9e is also a strong EV, but since you already find it a bit too gimmicky and are not looking for that kind of experience, it does not sound like the natural fit.As for the Tata Sierra EV, we would absolutely suggest waiting if you are not in a rush, because it is expected soon and could land in the sweet spot between the Harrier EV and the smaller EV SUVs in terms of practicality and positioning. If you need the car in the next couple of months for mostly city use with some weekend trips, pick the Kia Seltos HTE (O) IVT. It is well equipped and, compared to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, gives you more back-seat space and boot room.The Brezza update will be relatively minor, though we expect the 1.5 NA engine to make way for the 1.0 turbo-petrol from the Fronx. Waiting for it only makes sense if you mainly drive in tight city areas and want an easier-to-park car.Overall, for a near-term purchase and everyday comfort, the Seltos lines up best with what you’re considering.

You need a car for pure highway use and want the longest stretch between stops; in that case, we would lean towards the Mahindra XEV 9S 79kWh for its better real-world highway range. In our real-world testing, we managed 477 km on the highway, which suits your “pure highway” pattern. We have also tested the AWD Harrier EV, which managed 401 km (combined). While the RWD version should better that, it will likely still fall short of the XEV 9S’s range.One thing to note: the Mahindra’s ride can feel a bit floaty on undulating highway surfaces, so try it out before you commit. If that is an issue, the XEV 9e has a more settled ride.Overall, for highway-first use and maximum range, the XEV 9S 79kWh is the safer bet.
