I have a budget of ₹11 lakh. Is the Honda Amaze VX CVT a good option in terms of ride quality and reliability?

Asked by: Samar
The Honda Amaze is a strong option, thanks to its polished and premium CVT automatic, which makes it very easy and pleasant to drive. Although the Amaze is a newer model, it uses the same tried-and-tested engine and gearbox that Honda has offered for years, and this setup has proven to be dependable and reliable.
The ride quality is good as well, though this is where the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has a slight edge. The Dzire feels more pliant over bad roads, whereas sharper bumps are felt a bit more inside the Amaze’s cabin, especially by rear seat passengers. That said, it is not a deal breaker.
We would recommend taking a proper, long test drive with your family before making the final decision.

I have been driving a Honda Jazz Automatic for the last seven years. I am 6 feet tall and now want to buy a new compact SUV such as the Honda Elevate, Hyundai Creta, Skoda Kushaq, Grand Vitara, Brezza, or Taigun. Please advise which of these offers the best driver legroom so my knees are not strained. I am a retired 69-year-old.

The Honda Elevate would be a great upgrade based on your requirements. It has a spacious pedal box and a wide range of adjustment for the driver’s seat, which makes it comfortable even for taller drivers. It will also feel familiar, as it uses a CVT transmission similar to the Jazz you are used to driving. The engine and gearbox combination is smooth, making the Elevate easy and stress-free to drive. This Honda car also offers a comfortable ride quality, good cabin space and a large boot, making it a well-rounded package. In the case of the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, their updates are expected soon. Also, while their turbo petrol engines are punchy, they are not as smooth in everyday driving as the Elevate’s naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT.The Hyundai Creta CVT would have been a good option too, but its centre console tends to intrude and can brush against the left knee, especially if you are a tall driver.

I want to buy a new SUV. Which is better, the Brezza or the Grand Vitara? Also, which transmission is better: manual or automatic?

While the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Grand Vitara essentially belong to different segments, there is a price overlap. Without more details, we assume you are considering like-priced models of the duo. From the Grand Vitara line-up, that means the standard 1.5-litre petrol engine, which, incidentally, is shared with the Brezza. While the larger Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara does have a more upmarket air about it, we'd feel that opting for a better-equipped version of the Brezza would be a better use of your money. For reference, for the same money that you could get a fully-loaded Brezza ZXI Plus, you'll get a mid-spec Grand Vitara. The added features on the Brezza do count for a lot and your experience with the car. What also strengthens the Brezza's case is that, despite being a smaller vehicle, it feels airier than the Grand Vitara at the back. In terms of performance, there is little real-world difference, since both models use the same engine. If you live in a city and drive often on congested roads, an automatic would be the one we'd recommend. That said, manual gearbox versions of the Brezza and Grand Vitara are easy to live with too, thanks to their light clutches and smooth gearshifts.

I want to buy a seven-seater family car with a budget of around ₹15 lakh. Which one should I choose? I’m not a big fan of the Ertiga.

We'd suggest you check the Kia Carens Clavis. It's a very well-packaged MPV that offers good space for seven passengers. The Carens Clavis also feels superior to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in its cabin quality. The base 1.5-litre petrol offers reasonable performance, but if you will drive on highways often, you should consider the stronger turbo-petrol whose added performance counts for a lot. Do note, your budget will allow the standard 1.5-petrol in higher HTK trim and the 1.5 turbo-petrol in lower HTE(O) trim. Features that you get on the HTK but not on the HTE(O) include auto climate control, front parking sensors, and LED DRLs, among others.
