I am planning to buy an automatic car. My 90% running is in the city. I am confused between the Hyundai Venue DCT and the Maruti Brezza.

Both compact SUVs are hugely capable in their own right, albeit for different reasons. Considering your driving is mostly in the city, and you're looking at an automatic compact SUV, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Brezza AT.
Its combination of a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and 6-speed torque converter automatic is better suited to the city due to its smoother progress at low speeds. Overall, the Brezza is also likely to be more fuel-efficient. This is on top of its other inherent advantages like greater interior space and superior ride comfort.
The Hyundai Venue is better equipped and more powerful, but its gearbox feels clunky at low speeds, and it's easy for the 1.0-litre turbo petrol to fall into a zone of lag. Thus, for your needs, we would recommend the Brezza. However, keep in mind that a facelifted version is expected later this year, with more features that will bring it closer to the Venue, so it might be worthwhile waiting for that.

Hi, we are owning two cars, one Honda CVT-Amaze and used basically for long drive and another Celerio AMT for wife for commuting in a small city. Honda Amaze is two years old. But Celerio AMT is about 11 years old. We intend to replace with a suitable compact City car/hatchback/Petrol with Automatic transmission below ₹10 lakhs price. Kindly suggest between Suzuki Ignis/Swift/Brezza vs Skoda Kylaq AT vs Hyundai Grand i10 Nios/Exter/Vennue vs Tata Tiago/Punch/Nexon

I have been looking for a secondary car, primarily to be driven in the city. A petrol automatic would be preferred. Mileage is not a very big criterion. Good engine performance, features and a hassle-free ownership experience are on the must-have list. We are looking for something compact and easy to maneuver in the city and park in tight spaces. Budget is around ₹15 lakh, plus or minus a lakh. A lack of dealerships in the city we reside in restricts us to only a few brands: Maruti Suzuki (Nexa too), Kia, Hyundai, Mahindra, Toyota and Tata. We test drove the Hyundai Venue (new gen), Kia Sonet and also looked at the Toyota Fronx and Nexon. Which car would you kindly suggest?

The Hyundai Venue is a good option to consider. It is compact, has a good feature list, and the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy and fun to drive. The DCT automatic gearbox is also smooth and quick to respond. Being the newest entrant to the compact SUV segment, it gets a modern cabin that is well-equipped and gets all the features you would want. This Hyundai car also has decent space at the rear, and the ride comfort and sales and service experience is good, too. Overall, it is a well-rounded package that does everything the way you'd want it to. The HX 8 trim is one shy of the top-spec, but it will fit in your budget and offer a long equipment list.

I am planning to sell my Mahindra XUV500 as it is nearing the end of its registration validity in Delhi NCR, and I want to buy a 5-seater SUV under ₹10 lakh. My preference is for a fuel-efficient car as my daily running is around 100 km, but it should also be spacious enough for five people. Since fuel efficiency is a priority, I am open to both CNG and diesel cars. My usage will be 70% city and 30% highway, mostly within Delhi NCR. I have narrowed my choices to the Maruti Brezza CNG, Tata Nexon CNG, Kia Sonet Diesel, and Maruti Fronx CNG. Please help me evaluate which would be the better option. I am also open to any other better option if available.

The Maruti Brezza CNG and Fronx CNG will be more fuel efficient than the Nexon iCNG, and their clutch and gearbox make them friendlier to drive, too. The Brezza is due for a facelift in the coming weeks, so you might want to wait for that to arrive. The Kia Sonet diesel will feel punchier to drive (than the CNG options listed above), while being very efficient too. Also, by opting for a diesel, you won't need to wait in long queues to refill CNG. Even the Sonet is due for a generation update, which is likely to be launched this year. Another option you could consider is the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel MX2, which is more spacious than a Sonet. Its ride-handling balance is very impressive; the Sonet, however, has an edge in terms of fuel efficiency.

I am currently driving a Maruti Suzuki WagonR (2017), and I now feel the need to upgrade as my monthly running is around 1,500-2,000 km. What car should I buy within a budget of ₹14 lakh?

Since your monthly running is on the higher side, a diesel SUV would make sense. The newly updated Hyundai Venue in HX 5 trim would fit in your budget and is a big upgrade from the WagonR. The engine is refined, frugal and tried and tested, and should you get the manual gearbox, it has a light clutch that makes it easy in traffic. The HX 5 also gets a good level of kit, like a sunroof, cruise control, touchscreen, reversing sensors, TPMS, etc. The ride quality is good too, and it has a decent-sized boot for outstation trips. Hyundai's after-sales network is also one of the best, and it would be a hassle-free ownership experience.
