I am in the market for a scooter. I use the vehicle daily for office commuting and local city use, with about 30 km per day and around 600 km per month. I want a reliable scooter for daily city use with good after-sales service. In the past year, I have had a very bad experience with TVS service, which ruined the vehicle with poor service (sudden loss of power and engine shutoff), even though the scooter had been good for 5 years. Please suggest a suitable scooter for me.

Since you have had a bad experience with TVS recently, we'll recommend you take a look at the Suzuki Access, Honda Activa 110 / 125 models and the Yamaha Fascino / RayZR Hybrid. These Japanese scooters have an excellent reputation for reliability and are generally uncomplicated and inexpensive to service.

We must mention that the current TVS Jupiter 110 / 125 are some of the most well-rounded scooters in our opinion, and should you be willing to look past your bad experience, these should serve you well.

A test ride of all these options, as well as a chat with the service manager for these scooters. It will help paint a clearer picture and help you make an informed decision.

Hi Autocar, I am looking to buy a motorcycle in the 300-400cc segment with a retro design and good performance. I am considering the Jawa 42 FJ. Is it a good choice in this segment? Also, are there any reliability or long-term ownership issues with Jawa motorcycles that I should be aware of?

The Jawa 42 FJ is a good option to consider in the neo-retro space. While the earlier Jawa bikes had some issues, the latest models have ironed them out to a large extent. The 42 FJ also comes with a 4-year / 50,000km warranty, which should give you added peace of mind. Do bear in mind that while the bikes have come a long way, Classic Legends (the parent company of Jawa, Yezdi and BSA) still has a fairly hit/miss reputation when it comes to service. So we'd recommend getting in touch with your nearest authorised dealership and finding out more for yourself. If you reconsider your decision to go with the Jawa, then the Triumph Speed T4 is a great alternative. It has a smooth and torquey engine, good build quality and similiar overall performance as the 42 FJ. It would also be wise to take a test ride of both before you make a decision.

I am planning to buy a scooter for my daughter for her short daily trips to tuition classes, which would be around 15-20 km per day. My priorities are low seat height, good balance, and a reliable machine. I am considering buying a second-hand scooter like the Suzuki Access 125 or TVS Jupiter for around ₹50,000. Do you think this would be a good decision, or should I instead consider buying an electric scooter, which would cost ₹1 lakh or more? Some friends suggested buying an assembled electric scooter, but I am not comfortable with that option due to concerns about safety and reliability. What would be the best option in my situation?

Since your daily running is quite low, you should look at a petrol scooter - preferably brand new, for the peace of mind and the manufacturer's warranty it will come with. We'd recommend looking at the base variants of the Honda Activa 110, Suzuki Acess and TVS Jupiter 110. All scooters will be friendly for a newer rider because of their low kerb weights and approachable seat heights. If, however, your budget doesn't permit you to go for a new scooter, then a pre-owned Activa or Access would be our recommendation. The Activa and Access are some of the most popular scooters available, and finding a good example will be fairly straightforward. Because of their popularity and widespread service network, sourcing replacement parts should also be quite easy.
