I am a first-time buyer, although I have previously driven a Maruti Suzuki Baleno. My on-road budget is around ₹8 lakh. My priorities are comfort, safety, mileage, and a strong road presence. I am considering the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger, but their sales figures and service network make me a bit sceptical. I am also open to cars from other brands. Please suggest some good options within my budget, keeping my priorities in mind.

It also has the SUV-like road presence you are looking for, and the 187mm ground clearance is useful.

The one trade-off is highway performance; the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine needs downshifts for quick overtakes above 80kph, so you will need to plan overtakes more carefully. If you prioritise a smoother engine and a wider rear seat for family trips over an SUV stance, consider the Maruti Baleno instead.

On the test drive, check for engine refinement and cabin noise at speed, ride comfort over rough roads, and acceleration.

The only options in this price range are mild hybrids, which offer a small efficiency boost but do not provide the fuel savings or electric-only driving of a proper strong hybrid system. If you are specifically looking for a hybrid with a sunroof, you will need to increase your budget to around Rs 20 lakh or more, where cars like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid, Grand Vitara Hybrid and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid become available. These are proper strong hybrids and are among the most efficient cars in India today.If your budget is fixed at Rs 8-10 lakh, the best approach is to focus on a good mild hybrid car with a sunroof, such as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Brezza. If space is not the highest priority, get the Fronx, as it is better value for money, giving you more features for your money. The Brezza, however, has more interior space, more powerful engines and a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating, so it could be the better choice.But then your other requirement - a sunroof - will not be met by either of these, as Maruti only offers this feature in higher variants. I'm confused between Tata Punch 1.2 Adventure AMT and Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXI Turbo. Both are priced almost the same. My usage will mostly be weekend city driving, with the occasional 100+ km highway trip. The Punch offers more features for the price, while the Brezza has the advantage of Maruti Suzuki's proven reliability, lower maintenance costs, and excellent after-sales service. Considering my usage and priorities, which one would you recommend?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXI Turbo. Your usage is mostly weekend city driving with occasional highway trips, and in that scenario, the Brezza is the more sensible long-term choice. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine is punchy enough for city use and overtakes on the highway, while Maruti’s service network, lower maintenance costs and proven reliability make ownership far easier over the years. The Brezza also feels like a more substantial car, with better space and a more mature ride, which you will appreciate on longer drives.The Tata Punch 1.2 Adventure AMT does offer more features for the price, but the engine-AMT gearbox combination is slow, which won't feel as effortless to drive as the Brezza Turbo in hilly regions around Guwahati. Yes, with the Brezza Turbo, you only get a manual transmission, but unless having a clutch-free experience is an absolute must-have, get the Brezza.

The engine is punchy, the DSG gearbox is quick and engaging, and the overall driving experience is far more involving than the Seltos. The Taigun also feels more compact and agile in the city, while still being comfortable on the highway. The Volkswagen Taigun mileage is 19.54 kpl for the 1.0 TSI AT, 19.98 kpl for the 1.0 TSI MT, and 18.85 kpl for the 1.5 TSI DCT.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. The diesel engine is efficient and torquey, but it lacks the excitement of the 1.5 TSI. Given your history with Volkswagen cars, the Taigun will simply feel more familiar and more enjoyable to drive every day. The Taigun price starts at Rs 11.00 lakh (ex-showroom).

I am looking to buy an electric car in the Rs. 20-30 lakh price range. My driving is mostly within the city, with an annual running of only 5,000-7,000 km. Would you recommend buying an EV now, or would it be better to wait for the newer models that are expected to launch over the next few months?

With 5,000-7,000 km a year and mostly city driving, you are the ideal EV buyer. The Mahindra XEV 9S in its top-spec Pack Three guise will comfortably fit in your budget. With a 79kWh battery pack, you can easily expect a real-world range of around 480km in daily driving conditions. The 9S is also a full-size SUV with three rows, so practicality is excellent.
