Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy a 5-seater SUV within a budget of ₹18–19 lakh. I currently own a 15-year-old Honda City and am looking to upgrade. My key requirements are: Automatic transmission Petrol or hybrid powertrain Comfortable rear seat space (especially for second-row passengers) My usage is around 500 km per month, mostly within the city, with occasional outstation trips every couple of months. Please suggest a suitable SUV that meets these requirements.

At 500-700km monthly, your usage isn't much to start with, hence opting for a CNG vehicle won't lead to significant financial benefit. Still, the Tata Nexon iCNG will have the lowest running costs, and if you don't mind a smaller car, that belongs to a segment lower compared to the Honda Elevate and Kia Seltos, go for it.The Elevate will seem very familiar, as it has the same powertrain as your City, and what works in its favour are its comfy seats and excellent ride quality. Do note, the Elevate won't be as efficient as your City on account of its shorter gearing and heavier kerb weight.The Kia Seltos is the most expensive here, but it also feels the most modern and refined. If you can stretch your budget, this is the one we'd recommend.

For a family of five under Rs. 16 lakh, the Honda Elevate is one of the strongest value for money options right now. It is well priced, offers a spacious cabin, a genuinely usable rear seat for three and Honda’s reliability reputation makes it an easy family car recommendation. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is smooth and dependable, though it is not the most exciting if outright performance matters.If you want something that feels more premium and more refined overall, the Hyundai Creta is a great option. It has a richer cabin, better feature set and feels more polished as an everyday family car. It is one of the most rounded choices in this segment.The new Kia Seltos is another strong contender and in some ways feels even more premium than the Creta. It has a spacious cabin, good comfort and a strong overall package, making it a very easy recommendation if you want something that feels a bit more upmarket.

With 70 percent city use, some highway trips, a family of four, and a strict manual requirement, the Volkswagen Taigun GT Plus Sport 1.5 TSI manual is a good upgrade from your Maruti Suzuki Swift. However, the manual transmission on the 1.5 TSI was discontinued earlier this year and has not returned with the recent facelift. This means the car you are considering is a pre-facelift version that may have been sitting at the dealer for a while. Moreover, Rs 28 lakh also seems very steep, as the last recorded on-road price of the 1.5 GT Plus Sport MT in Chennai, as per our records, was around Rs 22-23 lakh. Haggle hard if you proceed, do a very thorough pre-delivery inspection, and push for an extended warranty.As for the vehicle itself, the 1.5 petrol with the manual is an excellent choice. It feels quick and smooth, pulls cleanly from low speeds so you do not have to shift constantly in traffic, and has strong performance for safe highway overtakes. It is not too big for city lanes, the higher seating position improves visibility, and it feels stable at speed. Cabin quality and the overall safety focus are clear steps up from your Swift.Two things to note for your usage: the clutch is heavier than your Swift’s, and fuel consumption and upkeep costs will be noticeably higher.Alternatively, you could consider the Hyundai Creta N Line manual or the Renault Duster 1.3 manual, both of which are great options for keen drivers.
