Tata Motors: 7,088 units, up 61 percent YoY

While Tata Motors has witnessed a revival of demand during August. It benefited from the recent launch of the Harrier EV, and it continues to see demand for the Punch and Nexon EVs, along with the Curvv EV. Tats’s EV sales have crossed 6,000 units for the second month in a row – August’s 7,088 units are up 13 percent on July’s 6,243 units, up 61 percent YoY (August 2024: 4,390 units), and give it a current market share of 41 percent. While this is considerably down on the 65 percent market share Tata Motors’ EVs commanded a year ago, the sales numbers are moving up, with August sales the highest in the past eight months of the current year.

MG Motor India: 4,759 units, up 231 percent YoY

While MG’s mass market electric cars – particularly the Windsor – continue to see demand, the company has forayed into the premium EV segment with recent launches like the M9 MPV and the Cyberster roadster. Both models are retailed through the new MG Select dealership network.

The company, which also retails the ZS EV and Comet EV, sold 4,759 units, up 231 percent YoY (August 2024: 1,437 units). This translates into an additional 3,322 units YoY and sees its market share increase to 27.51 percent from 21 percent a year ago. It should be noted that the brand’s retails are down 10 percent on July 2025’s 5,290 units, which was the highest monthly sales for MG in the current year.

Mahindra: 3,495 units, up 937 percent YoY

Mahindra continues to register strong growth in August. As per Vahan data, the company, which sells the BE 6, XEV 9e and XUV400, delivered 3,495 electric SUVs to customers last month, which makes August the third month in CY2025 to see 3,000-plus sales after April (3,290 units) and June (3,207 units). Mahindra’s YoY EV sales increase for August 2025 is 937 percent on a low year-ago base (August 2024: 337 units). As a result, its market share has risen to 20 percent from 5 percent a year ago.

Hyundai: 584 units, up 1290 percent YoY

Hyundai retailed 584 EVs last month, up 1,290 percent YoY (August 2024: 42 units), which sees its market share grow to 3 percent from less than one percent a year ago. While the launch of the Hyundai Creta Electric in January this year helped the company drive ahead of BYD India, consumer response to the zero-emission avatar of India’s best-selling midsize SUV has been tepid. Hyundai also retails the Ioniq 5 in India.

BYD: 447 units, up 97 percent YoY

BYD, the world’s largest electric passenger carmaker, came in fifth place in August by retailing 447 units, up 97 percent YoY (August 2024: 227 units). May 2025 (530 units) remains BYD India’s best month ever since the Chinese carmaker began sales in India. BYD India currently sells the Atto 3 SUV, Seal sedan, eMax 7 MPV, and the Sealion 7 SUV.

Kia: 441 units, up 2105 percent YoY

With retail sales of 441 units, Kia India has jumped into sixth place, going ahead of BMW India in the monthly rankings, and registering 2,105 percent YoY growth on a low year-ago base of just 20 units, when it was ranked 10th. This performance, which is directly driven by the recent launch of the mass-market Carens Clavis electric MPV, gives Kia a 3 percent market share compared to just 0.29 percent a year ago. August 2025 sales also mark the first time that Kia India has clocked three-figure EV retails in a single month and are its highest yet. Kia’s EV portfolio also contains the EV6 and EV9, which are imported as CBUs into the country and, as a result, are far more expensive than the Carens Clavis EV.

Luxury EV sales by carmaker

Luxury carmakers sell 464 EVs, up 170 percent YoY

In tandem with the growth in the mass-market electric passenger vehicle industry, the luxury EV segment too has witnessed strong sales in August 2025. The 464 zero-emission vehicles delivered to customers last month are a 170 percent YoY increase (August 2024: 172 units) and account for 2.68 percent of the overall EV market for last month.

BMW and Mini: 362 units, up 410 percent YoY

BMW India, the luxury EV market leader in CY2024 with 1,227 units and a 47 percent market share, maintains its strong showing in August with 362 units, up 410 percent on August 2024’s 71 units, and is ranked seventh amongst the 14 e-PV manufacturers in India. In August, BMW India has a 78 percent share of the 464 zero-emission vehicles sold last month.

Mercedes: 68 units, up 23 percent

Mercedes-Benz India sold 68 cars and SUVs last month, up 23 percent on the 53 e-PVs it sold in August 2024. This performance gives it a 15 percent share of the luxury e-PV market.

While Volvo Auto India, with 16 EVs sold last month, is down 58 percent YoY (August 2024: 33 units), Audi sold just three EVs in August 2025, but both Rolls-Royce and JLR scored zero sales.
