Based on your requirements, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid is the most suitable recommendation. It offers a strong hybrid system that delivers excellent fuel efficiency in city driving, a spacious enough rear seat and a reasonably sized boot. The ride quality is comfortable and Maruti's service network in Pune is among the best in the country. The hybrid system also makes a meaningful difference on long drives, where the petrol engine and electric motor work together to deliver smooth and efficient performance. This Maruti Suzuki car is essentially the same car as the Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder underneath, but it gets a more premium interior and a better feature list, including Level 2 ADAS at a similar price point. If you are open to a non-hybrid option, the Honda Elevate is also worth considering. It offers a spacious cabin, a comfortable ride and Honda's reputation for reliability, but it does not offer the same fuel efficiency advantage as the Victoris Hybrid. Currently, I own a Sonet and am extremely unhappy with its poor suspension and very low mileage. My driving is mostly limited to congested areas and heavy traffic, with a daily running of around 20–22 km. I also do not have dedicated EV charging facilities, so a fully electric vehicle is not an option. Given my priorities of good mileage and a comfortable rear-seat ride without excessive wobbling or jerking, would it make sense to go for a strong hybrid such as the Toyota Hyryder or Maruti Suzuki Vitara, or would a regular Honda City be the better choice? I am particularly wondering whether spending an additional Rs 7-8 lakh on a hybrid would be justified, considering my relatively low daily usage of around 22 km. Open to all suggestions.

Go for the Honda City petrol CVT. The City’s CVT is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-and-go traffic, and the rear seat ride is comfortable and stable, which addresses your main complaint with the Kia Sonet. The strong hybrid premium on the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara / Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is difficult to justify at your running; the fuel savings will take a very long time to recover, and the City’s petrol efficiency is good enough for your usage pattern. The City also has a proven long-term ownership track record with low running costs and a comfortable ride, which is exactly what you are looking for. If you want a slightly higher seating position and a more SUV-like feel, the Honda Elevate is a good alternative with the same engine and a similarly comfortable ride.

Getting 21-22 kmpl on my City hybrid, mostly city commute with the AC running the whole time. Curious how close this is to what other owners are seeing.

I am currently using my dad's Maruti Ritz and wish to upgrade to a more premium sedan or SUV. My current shortlist includes the Toyota Hyryder Strong Hybrid, Skoda Slavia, and Honda City e:HEV. Several thoughts and concerns keep coming to mind regarding each vehicle. The Hyryder is not a proper SUV, and its 3-cylinder engine has more vibration than 4-cylinder engines. The Slavia's 4-cylinder engine is giving single-digit fuel efficiency, especially with the E20 fuel concerns. I am also worried about the long-term maintenance of its turbo engine. The City e:HEV is priced above Rs. 20 lakh, attracting luxury tax, and its on-road price goes beyond Rs. 25 lakh. I am not sure whether the cost-benefit equation will work in favour of the City. The Slavia facelift is also around the corner. I wish to keep my next car for at least 10 years.

Based on your requirements, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Strong Hybrid is the most sensible upgrade. Your concerns about the 3-cylinder engine are understandable, but in the hybrid, the petrol engine is assisted by the electric motor, which smooths out the power delivery and reduces the typical 3-cylinder vibrations. This Toyota car also delivers excellent fuel efficiency, especially in city driving, which will make a significant difference over a 10-year ownership period. While it may not be a "proper" SUV in the traditional sense, it offers a higher seating position, good ground clearance and a comfortable ride, making it a practical and premium upgrade from the Ritz.The Honda City e: HEV is a strong alternative, but the higher price pushes it into a different budget bracket, and the cost-benefit equation becomes harder to justify. The Skoda Slavia is a great driver's car with a smooth 4-cylinder engine, an extremely practical cabin and strong performance, but if efficiency is a high priority, it is best to stick to the strong hybrid. The Slavia will receive an update soon, which will also feature a new gearbox which replaces the earlier Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque converter (AQ250) with a newer Aisin 8-speed torque converter (AQ300). This will be exclusive to the 1.0-litre engine and will be a bit more efficient too. However, in comparison to a strong hybrid, nothing really comes close. Overall, the Hyryder Strong Hybrid offers the best balance of efficiency, reliability and ownership experience for your needs.
