BMW M, BMW’s performance arm, has unveiled the new-generation X5 M and X6 M for the international market. They will get their global premier at the Los Angeles motor show 2014.

The new SUV pair gets an upgraded version of the 4.4-litre V8 turbo petrol engine used by the M5 sedan and M6 coupé. The V8 provides the new X5 M and X6 M with 564bhp at 6000rpm. However, changes to the induction system has increased the torque output by 7.2kgm over the M5, M6; 76.5kgm is developed between 2200 and 5000rpm. Overall, there's an increase of 17bhp and 7.2kgm over the first generation X5 M X6 M. Power is sent to all the  four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the six-speed unit used by the earlier X5 M and X6 M. Other features include a start/stop option and brake energy recuperation functions.

Tipping the scales by 30kg compared to the predecessors at 2275kg and 2265kg respectively, the new X5 M and X6 M possess a claimed 0-100kph time of 5.4sec; that's an improvement of 0.3 seconds over the first-gen models. The nominal top speed remains limited to 250kph, although owners can choose to have it raised to 280kph.By comparison, the 2185kg Cayenne Turbo possesses claimed figures of 4.2sec and 280kph, while the 2345kg ML63 AMG boasts performance claims of 4.8sec and a limited top speed of 250kph.

A new front bumper with large air intakes, painted wheel arch flares, revised front fenders, chunkier door sills and a deeper rear bumper with quad exhausts with chrome finish. Buyers can choose between standard 20-inch wheels or optional 21-inch rims distinguish the pair from the previous gen cars.

BMW’s M division says it has brought about significant changes to the standard X5 and X6 suspension systems in the creation of the X5 M and X6 M. The new M-car duo comes with standard air suspension featuring a self-levelling rear axle and electronically adjustable dampers in three modes: comfort, sport and sport plus, along with active roll bar stabilisation and an electronic stability control system featuring three different modes.
