New Volkswagen boss Matthias Müller has confirmed that recalls to fix cars affected by the company's emissions scandal will start in January.

Speaking to a German newspaper, Müller said that all cars affected by the scandal would be fixed by the end of next year. Yesterday, Müller confirmed a technical fix for the affected cars was close to being approved. He said that some models will only require a software fix, whereas others will need software and hardware updates.

Müller confirmed to a gathering of 20,000 workers that the proposed fix will be presented to authorities for ratification imminently. Although he mentioned there were two fixes, he did not go in to specifics as to which engines will require which upgrades. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the hardware updates are focused on the 1.6-litre version of the EA189 diesel engine, which may require new fuel injectors.

Müller said: "Our most important task will be to regain lost confidence with our customers, partners, investors and the general public. The first step in this direction will be a fast and relentless examination and explanation. Only when everything comes to the table, only when things are completely explained, only then will people trust us again.

"Believe me, I too am impatient. But in this situation, in which we are dealing with four brands and many models, care is more important than speed.

"The technical solutions to the problems are in sight. By contrast, the business and financial consequences are not yet foreseeable."
