The new Chevrolet Volt has been unveiled at the Detroit motor show 2015. This second generation of the plug-in hybrid, gets cosmetic changes on the outside and in, and is also more efficient. It also offers 81km of all-electric range.
Chevrolet claims to have cut weight from the battery pack, and it now weighs almost 10kg less. The two-motor drive unit has also been tweaked to operate up to 12 percent more efficiently than the outgoing Volt’s. The two motors work in tandem with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 74bhp. Total output from the assembly stands at 118bhp; this is enough to propel the new Volt from 0-100kph in 8.4 seconds, while going onto a top whack of 158kph. Full charging time when connected to a 13-amp socket is placed at 13 hours; on a fast charger though, it takes only four and a half hours.
On the outside, the new Volt’s design has been improved aerodynamically. The car looks more toned, and is complemented by shapely fenders and fine curves on the sides. The shiny chrome bands on the grille are retained, as are the low-mounted daytime-running lights.
The cabin can accommodate five people and gets new contrasting upholstery, blue ambient lighting, touchscreen on the centre console, and an additional touchscreen in the instrument panel. Standard features on this new Volt that looks to take the fight to Tesla in international markets, includes, ten air bags and a reversing camera, amongst a host of other driver assist and safety features.
