Skoda has added the new Superb into its Indian line-up. TheSuperb is now available in two varaints - Style and Laurent & Klement  (L&K).

The carmaker's flagship sedan is based on Volkswagen’s lightweight modular MQB platform, which will also underpin the upcoming Volkswagen Passat. The new underpinnings have resulted in the new Superb being 75kg lighter than its predecessor, despite being a larger car. It is also more spacious now, thanks to a longer wheelbase.

The car has been launched with two engine options –  a 174.6bhp, 35.69kgm, 2.0-litre diesel and a 1.8-litre, direct injection, turbocharged petrol. The petrol motor comes in two versions; TSI(A) producing 32.63kgm and a TSI that produces 25.49kgm of peak torque. Both engines produce 177.5bhp of peak power. The diesel motor comes mated to a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, while the petrol car gets a six-speed manual in its TSI(A) variant. The less powerful TSI petrol motor comes equipped with a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox. All automatic gearbox-equipped cars also get paddle-shifters and a Tiptronic manual gear-changing function.

Along with a more spacious and comfortable interior, the Superb is also practical. It sports a 625-litre boot, for instance, and gets an umbrella stowed in each front door. The sedan gets Skoda’s SmartLink infotainment system as standard. The system is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 6.5-inch touchscreen interface. The top-end L&K trim additionally gets features like three-zone climate control, full-leather interior, and a 610W, 12-speaker Canton audio system.

Standard safety kit on the Superb includes Hill Hold Control, ABS, pedestrian protection, multi-collosion brake assist, dual front airbags, front and rear side-airbags and curtain airbags. It also gets a Driver-fatigue detection system.

Skoda claims a fuel-efficiency figure of 14.12kpl for the manual petrol car and 14.67kpl on the automatic petrol. The automatic-only diesel car claims to return a respectable 18.19kpl.

The Superb range starts at Rs 22.68 (ex-Showroom, Mumbai). The Superb goes against the Toyota Camry and Honda's upcoming new-Accord.
