Mini has confirmed that it is planning to launch the production version of the Superleggera Vision concept in international markets sometime in 2019. The Superleggera roadster is expected to be part of Mini’s future five-model line-up as an off-shoot of the Cooper Cabriolet.
The Superleggera, like other Minis, is expected to be based on the UKL platform and inherently be front-wheel drive as well. The company though has not ruled out the possibility of an all-wheel-drive model.
Stylistically, the production model is expected to borrow heavily from the concept, with a long nose and short rear overhang to give it classic roadster proportions.
Under the bonnet, the two-seater Superleggera is expected to get a family of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from the current Mini line-up. This means that the existing 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre motors from the current Cooper range are likely to make their way into the new Mini. Power outputs are likely to be around 135bhp for the entry level to around 225bhp for a John Cooper Works model.
Also likely to make its way to the model is a hybrid powertrain. The powertrain – set to debut in the BMW 2-series Active Tourer – features a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine developing around 134bhp at the front and a rear-mounted electric motor developing around 87bhp. The carmaker says that the set-up would allow the new Mini to use an all-wheel-drive system.
The hybrid powertrain will be making its way to the Mini brand under the hood of the next-gen Countryman due in 2017 before making its way to the Superleggera roadster in 2019. When launched, the two-seater roadster will rival the likes of the Mazda MX-5 in international markets.
