Maruti will launch the Ciaz on October 6. Bookings have been open for the car since the start of September and from what the dealers suggest, first wave of response to the car has been satisfying. Some dealers have spoken of receiving around 250-300 bookings with a fair amount of interest being shown for the automatic ZXi variant. We have the detailed review up here, but this is a quick heads up of what the Maruti Ciaz brings to the table.

Exterior - The 2650mm wheelbase gives it quite a big look. The prominent Suzuki-ish grille, large wheels and the wide track offer it both, a clean front end and a rather plated stance. The projector headlamps and large wraparound tail-lamps add flavour to the design.

Interior - The Ciaz is a pretty large mid-size sedan and it does translate to spacious interiors. Things like large glass areas, light interior theme, wide rear bench and flat floor mean more than adequate space for people most sizes. Maruti is also known to be a little restrained when it comes to equipping their cars; but with the Ciaz, Maruti has tried to load the higher trims of the car with a heavy array of features. Top trims get additions like dual airbags upfront, infotainment system with touchscreen, reversing camera leather upholstery, keyless entry and go and rear sunshade.

Mechanicals - Two engines are on offer, a 91bhp 1.4-litre petrol and an 89bhp 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel. Both engines are borrowed from the Ertiga, but have been tuned for improved responsiveness and drivability. The petrol engine is coupled to a five speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic, while the diesel engine comes only with the five-speed manual gearbox.

With an overall package that looks to offer good drivability, spacious interiors, smart styling and generous levels of equipment, Maruti looks to take on segment heavyweights like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna. Maruti also faces an additional challenge from the likes of the new Volkswagen Vento and new Skoda Rapid that have been recently launched with a diesel automatic in their arsenal. Does the Ciaz manage to shak things up in the segment will depend on the pricing, come October…
