Chevrolet has revealed first images of the hatchback version of the Cruze Saloon. The new model will be based on the same platform as the saloon and will share a similar engine lineup.

Athough General Motors uses the term 'show car' for the Cruze Hatch, the five-door version of the Cruze is virtually production ready minus some show-floor bling such as the blue hue on the headlamps, big wheels and the LED daytime running lights.Chevrolet says the new Cruze hatchback will be instantly recognizable, as it has the same dynamic ‘stance’ as the saloon.

GM also says it will benefit from the same taut body ‘feel’ on the road, as the model is being built using the new body-frame integral system (BFI) that Chevrolet claims results in high levels of stability and solidity.Cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 litres and will feature 60/40 split rear seating.

Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe said the potential for meeting customer demand is significant.“We are selling [the Cruze] in 70 countries around the world and it has recently surpassed the Aveo as our top-selling passenger car nameplate globally.”

The new Cruze hatchback will go on sale in Europe mid-2011 followed by other markets.
