The 4th gen Skoda Octavia line-up has gained new mild-hybrid engine options in international markets. This makes the Octavia the first Skoda to get both, mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid powertrain options.

  • Skoda Octavia e-TEC gets a 48V mild-hybrid system
  • 110hp, 1.0-litre and 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines get the setup
  • India-bound 4th gen Octavia to get 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine at launch

Which engines is the mild-hybrid tech available with?

Depending on the market, the mild-hybrid Octavia can be specced with either a 110hp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine or a 150hp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The mild-hybrid system uses a belt-integrated starter generator to recover energy during braking and also charge the 48V lithium-ion battery. This allows the battery to power systems like the steering and allow for extended coasting without using the internal combustion engine. The hybrid setup also allows up to 50Nm of torque to be supplied on demand.

A 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox is standard; there’s no manual option with the mild-hybrid Octavia.

Performance figures have yet to be officially confirmed, but Skoda promises enhanced efficiency over the standard Octavia with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol option. The engine operates on the Miller injection cycle, which is said to offer maximum torque 35 percent earlier than on a conventional engine.

Will the India-bound 4th gen Skoda Octavia get the mild-hybrid tech?

We’ve exclusively reported on the delay in the India launch of the all-new Skoda Octavia. In a roundtable conference at the launch of the Skoda Rapid 1.0 TSI automatic, Zac Hollis, director – Sales, Service & Marketing at Škoda Auto India confirmed that 4th gen Octavia prices will be revealed early in 2021.

When it arrives, the new Octavia will just have a 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. However, more engine options are likely to be added to the range after the model has been introduced, including the 150hp, 1.5-litre TSI unit. Whether it’ll come bundled with the e-TEC mild-hybrid system is yet unknown, but if it does, it’ll be the first executive sedan in India to sport the technology.
