BMW Group India has revealed sales for the first quarter of 2020. Cumulative sales for BMW and Mini stood at 2,482 units reflecting a 16.77 percent drop compared to the same period last year. Moving to individual numbers, BMW sold 2,365 units in the first three months of 2020. While the figure is 17.84 percent down on its performance last year, BMW has managed to close the gap to sales leader Mercedes-Benz in what was a tough first quarter for the auto industry as a whole. Mercedes sold 2,386 cars in the period, just 21 more than BMW.

In its sales report, BMW has stated that its SUV line-up comprising the X1, X3, X5 and X7 brought in over 50 percent of sales, with the 3 series and 5 series sedan being strong contributors as well.

Mini witnessed a sales drop selling 117 units compared to Q1 2019’s figure of 160 units. The Cooper hatchback and Countryman accounted for 60 percent of Mini’s sales, the carmaker revealed.

Commenting on the sales numbers Rudratej Singh, President and Chief Executive Officer, BMW Group India said, “The coronavirus pandemic presents a mammoth challenge to public health, industry, economy and our business. With the strength of its admired brands and superior products, BMW Group India will remain resilient and responsive in every way. The current situation has brought many operational difficulties and eliminated valuable physical interactions with customers at dealerships. BMW Group India has introduced innovative, contactless and safe ways to meet the requirements of existing as well as potential customers together with dedicated dealer partners, expert teams and strong backbone of processes. Until normalcy returns, our focus will be on consistent digital interaction with our customers and maintaining the performance.”
