Volvo is previewing the next-generation of its XC90 SUV with these official design sketches. The all-new model could be launched in 2014 and will feature an ultra-low CO2 diesel-electric hybrid version as part its line-up.

The four sketches – each one slightly different – reveal a more modern interpretation of the popular SUV, a car which first hit Indian roads back in 2007. Volvo looks to be taking the styling of the next XC90 in the direction of its Concept You. It features a front grille inspired by the Frankfurt concept and a lower, more squat stance.

The SUV continues to be powered by the 2.4-litre D5 turbodiesel engine, which powers the front wheels. There maybe a slight jump in power figures. The rear axle is powered by Volvo’s 69bhp ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive) system, making the car 4x4 when called upon. A six-speed automatic transmission also features.

Volvo has confirmed that the new Volvo XC90 will be the first production car to be built on the firm’s upcoming scalable platform architecture, which allows forthcoming models to be built on the same production line, irrespective of size. A new four-cylinder-only engine range is also part of the plan as is the use of hybrid and electric powertrains.

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid – revealed for the first time at the Geneva motor show – is the model likely to lend its powertrain to the next XC90 for production.
