Volkswagen showcased its new ID Cross concept, previewing an electric crossover, at the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich, Germany. According to VW, the new EV is named to position it as the electric counterpart to the T-Cross. It’s also part of a new naming strategy, replacing the number-based system that has been used since 2018, starting with the Volkswagen ID 3. The production version of the Volkswagen ID Cross will be introduced in international markets by late 2026.

Like other EVs using the MEB Entry base, power comes from a front-mounted electric motor that produces 211hp. VW claims a top speed of 175kph and a range of up to 420km on the WLTP cycle. Reportedly, the production car may borrow 38kWh and 56kWh battery pack options from the upcoming electric Polo.

The concept measures 4,161mm long, 1,839mm wide and 1,588mm tall; wheelbase measures 2,601mm. It’s underpinned by the MEB Entry electric platform, also used by other carmakers under the Volkswagen Group umbrella.

Illuminated VW roundels, 21-inch wheels

The wide, flush surfaces give it a clean and modern face, with slim Matrix LED headlights connected by an illuminated strip running across the nose into an illuminated VW roundel. A high-set bonnet and flared wheel arches give it a crossover look, finished by cladding and a golden trim on the front bumper.

In profile, the car has pull-type door handles and chunky cladding under the doors and wheel arches. Distinctive design cues on the C-pillar echo those of the VW ID Buzz. As for the wheels, they have a sporty design and measure 21 inches. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar bridges twin rectangular tail-lamps, with an illuminated VW logo in the centre. Like at the front, a trim piece finished in gold has been attached to the bumper.

Volkswagen ID Cross concept interior features

11-inch driver’s display, 13-inch touchscreen

The ID Cross previews a five-seat electric vehicle. Inside, the ID Cross has a light beige colour scheme, with soft fabric used for the seats, doors and dashboard. The dashboard has a simple design, with two displays: an 11-inch digital driver’s display and a central 13-inch touchscreen. Below the latter sits a climate control panel with illuminated physical buttons, plus a centre console that has wireless charging pads, cup holders, and even slots for small plants or fragrance units. For longer breaks, the Relax mode folds the seats flat, turning the cabin into a resting space. Boot space is 450 litres, and there’s a 25-litre frunk as well.
