The BMW iX is all set to launch in India on December 13, making it the German carmaker’s first all-electric offering in our market. Given that the new BMW iX will come as a CBU (full import), the fact that it has scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests will be a big positive for the EV SUV. This rating is also applicable to all variants of both left-hand drive and right-hand drive configurations.

  • The BMW iX safety ratings are valid for all variants and configurations
  • It scored 34.7 out of 38 points in Adult Occupant protection tests
  • It scored 43 out of 49 points in the Child Occupant protection tests

BMW iX Euro NCAP crash test score

Starting with the Adult Occupant protection category, the BMW iX received a 91 percent rating, scoring 34.7 out of a possible 38 points. In this category, the iX got perfect scores in the lateral impact test and rear impact test, while it lost 1 point (out of 2) in the rescue and extraction test and 2.3 points (out of 16) in the frontal impact test.

In the Child Occupant protection category, the iX got 87 percent, scoring 43 out of a possible 49 points. Again, the all-electric SUV secured maximum possible scores in the frontal impact test, lateral impact test and child restraint system (CRS) installation tests. It was only let down in the safety features category as it didn’t have CRS on the front passenger seat or the centre seat on the second-row.

The Vulnerable Road User was the category where the BMW iX received its lowest of 73 percent, scoring 39.9 out of a possible 54 points. The electric BMW got 24.2 out of 36 points in the pedestrian impact test where it performed decently in the head and leg impact protection, but scored zero points in the pelvis impact protection. It faired better in the Autonomous Emergency braking (AEB) test, where it secured 6.9 out of 9 points in the pedestrian AEB test and 8.7 out of 9 points in the cyclist AEB test.

Lastly, in the Safety Assists category, the EV SUV earned an 81 percent rating, scoring 13 out of a possible 19 points. The iX also scored well in the speed assist test, driver alertness monitoring test and car-to-car AEB test. However, it did lose points in the lane-keep assist and seatbelt reminder test.

BMW iX India: expected price and rivals

Once launched, the BMW iX will take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz EQCAudi e-tron SUV and Sportback and the Jaguar I-Pace in India. While we don’t have specific details about the variants that will be offered here yet, we expect the iX to be priced similar to its rivals – over the Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom) mark.
