Bajaj Dominar 400 gets retuned KTM 390 engine

Bajaj finally launched its first-ever high-capacity motorcycle, the Dominar 400, and took everyone by surprise. The power-cruiser is Bajaj’s latest flagship and is the first model in the new sub-brand of high-performance motorcycles from the bike maker. Here's some more information on the bike.

Bajaj Dominar engine and gearbox details

The Bajaj Dominar 400 uses a derivative of the KTM 390’s engine. It comes with a 373cc, single-cylinder unit with a six-speed gearbox and a slipper-clutch. Featuring fuel-injection, liquid-cooling, Bajaj’s patented triple-spark plug technology, and a finger-follower-camshaft four-valve-per-cylinder setup, the motor produces 35hp of power at 8,000rpm, and 35Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. The outputs are slightly lower than that of the KTMs, but Bajaj has retuned the engine to better suit the Dominar’s touring requirements; it also comes with a 13-litre fuel tank. The bike can do a 0-100kph dash in 8.23sec and reach a top-speed of 148kph.

Bajaj Dominar equipment

The Dominar has a split instrument cluster, with one on the fuel tank and the other on the handlebars. The digital instruments include a tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, an odometer and trip meters. It is equipped with good-quality switchgear, comfortable palm grips, a comfortable set of levers and KTM Duke-like mirrors. The intimidating-looking mosaic headlamp is a full LED unit with Auto Headlamp On function (AHO).

The Dominar 400 comes with a beam-type perimeter frame, with 43mm telescopic forks at the front and an adjustable monoshock at the rear. Stopping power comes from a 320mm single disc brake in the front and a 230mm one at the rear, with the fully-loaded variant getting dual-channel ABS. The bike rides on 110/70 R17 and 150/60 R17 front and rear wheels shod with MRF Revz C1 rubber.

Bajaj took the industry and enthusiasts by surprise with its aggressive pricing strategy which is sure to make the competition rush to strategise their next move. The Bajaj Dominar 400 has been priced at Rs 1.36 lakh and for Rs 1.5 lakh you can get the ABS-equipped variant, both prices ex-showroom, Delhi.

The bike has no direct rivals and has been priced significantly lower than its closest competition, the Mahindra Mojo, priced at Rs 1.69 lakh; and the Royal Enfield Himalayan, priced at Rs 1.57 lakh.
