Just this year, Indian Motorcycle announced that it would be making a road-legal version of its successful FTR 750 flat track racer. Now, not only is there an official unveil date of the motorcycle (October 1, 2018) but also a leaked image of the production-spec motorcycle.
A few days ago, Indian motorcycle put up a video of the company’s FTR 750 in action which ended with a message that said ‘the flat tracker for the street is coming’. While the company has not shared much about the upcoming motorcycle, it has been showcasing the FTR 1200 Custom, a one-off build that did the rounds at global motorcycle shows. However, there is now a leaked image of what appears to be the road-ready motorcycle.
The bike in the leaked image does appear to share the same design language as the FTR 1200 Custom but appears to have gone through many changes for it to meet regulations. While the frame and swing arm on the bike in the spy image is still red in colour, it appears to have been reworked. The production-spec motorcycle is equipped with a USD fork and a twin-disc set-up at the front, instead of the regular telescopic fork and single disc on the FTR 1200 Custom.
The motorcycle also gets a larger, conventionally-positioned exhaust unlike the under-seat unit on the Custom. Other visible changes are the mandatory turn indicators and the addition of a rear fender and larger headlight.
Powering the Custom is the company’s 1,133cc motor that makes 94hp and 97Nm of torque. Indian, however, is yet to reveal the road-legal FTR 1200’s specifications although the company says it will embody a flat tracker style with a trellis frame and will be powered by a new V-twin engine.
Indian Motorcycle sells almost all (barring a few Bagger models) of its bikes in India and we expect the upcoming FTR to follow suit. The FTR 1200 will also likely be Indian’s sportiest offering yet and is sure to draw in a new customer base.
