Bajaj Auto and Pierer Mobility, the parent company of KTM, have announced plans to jointly develop a series of electric two-wheelers in the 4kW to 11 kW power range.

  • Aim to become a global leader in 4-11kW EV space

  • To be manufactured at Bajaj’s factory in India

Bajaj-Pierer Mobility’s EVs: Big ambitions

Bajaj and Pierer Mobility plan to develop a common electric two-wheeler platform on which a series of EVs, of varying motor sizes, will be made. These electric vehicles will be manufactured in India, possibly at Bajaj's plant in Chakan.

The companies aim to become a global leader in the 4-11kW electric vehicle segment under the new strategy. As per their estimates, the existing scooter and motorcycle market in Europe, between 50cc and 125cc, will become 50 percent electric within the next decade.

At present, Bajaj builds the Chetak electric scooter in Pune, a product that has been designed and manufactured indigenously.

Husqvarna E-Pilen and e-scooter in the works

The Husqvarna E-Pilen concept was showcased recently. The styling cues are borrowed from the Husqvarna Svartpilen 250 and Vitpilen 250, and it comes with an 8kW (10.8hp) motor, although it's quite likely that there will be other versions available as well. The frame-mounted motor sends power to the rear wheel via a chain-drive. The company says the E-Pilen concept can travel 100km on a full charge. The production-spec Husqvarna E-Pilen is to be manufactured at Bajaj’s plant in Chakan, Pune, and it will go on sale in 2022.

A Husqvarna e-scooter is also in the works. This e-scooter will be powered by a 4kW electric motor, similar to what you get in the Bajaj Chetak. The concept image reveals a scooter with typical Husqvarna design cues and colours. As per latest reports, the launch of Husqvarna electric scooter has been postponed to 2022.
