Update – Hero has launched the Xtreme 200R at Rs 88,000 (ex-showroom). However, only eight North-eastern states in India are listed and each shows the same price on the official Hero website.

Hero has unveiled its Xtreme 200R that is based on the concept they showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. The motorcycle features a 200cc engine and optional single-channel ABS. Hero has said that this new bike will go on sale by around April 2018 and that prices will be announced closer to the date.

In terms of styling, the Xtreme follows along the lines of the concept with its sharp bodywork and dual-tone graphics. The 200R also comes equipped with an LED DRL up front and an all-LED tail-light. But there are some changes, the tail section is cleaner and less bulky and there are some small tweaks all around. The motorcycle also comes equipped with a new digi-analogue instrument cluster. Hero says that it has redesigned the seat for better ergonomics and comfort.

Powering this bike is a 199.6cc engine that is based on the 150cc one seen on the Achiever. The air-cooled motor produces 18.4hp at 8,000rpm and 17.1Nm of torque at 6,500rpm and is mated to a five-speed gearbox. The engine gains a balancer shaft for extra refinement, which is a first for a Hero. The 200R has a claimed 0-60kph time of 4.6sec and top speed of 114kph. Interestingly, Hero has said that it has paid special focus on creating a good exhaust note.

Hero has also concentrated on handling and stability while developing the 200R – it has different steering geometry to the concept bike and a longer wheelbase. The bike comes with a 276mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc, single-channel ABS is an optional extra. Taking care of suspension duties is a conventional 37mm front fork (the biggest seen on a Hero to date) and a seven-step adjustable rear shock. The bike also comes equipped with a 130/70 R17 rear tyre and a 100/80 R17 front tyre, the rear is a radial. The Xtreme 200R has a kerb weight of 146kg and fuel tank capacity of 12.4 litres.

At the unveiling, Malo le Masson, Head Global Product Planning was quoted saying, “2018 will be the year of the reshaping of Hero. This reshaping is about going into segments that the brand doesn't exist and creating more excitement”.
