The Yamaha R2 uses a new 204cc single-cylinder DOHC engine making 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm at 8,000rpm and paired with a six speed gearbox. There are three variants on offer, all of which get a TFT screen with riding modes. The mid variant adds a bi-directional quickshifter, while the top M version brings in adjustable levers, preload-adjustable front suspension, keyless start/steering lock and a unique paint scheme. For this test, we had the mid spec variant.

The R2 has a slightly weak bottom end but as soon as it crosses 3500rpm, the mid range performance is potent. As it crosses the 7000rpm mark, there is a proper surge in power as it rushes to the 11,000rpm redline. Using the bi-directional quickshifter in our run, it managed a time of 9.01 seconds. Compared to the R15 which we tested in 2021, the R2 is over 3 seconds quicker in the sprint to 100kph.

Yamaha R2: Roll-On Acceleration

The bike makes 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm at 8,000rpm.

The roll-on acceleration figures are quite good and the R2 is able to make quick overtakes when necessary. It is also very tractable and can easily handle doing slow speeds of 20kph in 3rd gear. This makes it very usable in everyday riding scenarios. The clutch action is light and the bi-directional quickshifter also works well.

Yamaha R2: Braking

Decent braking performance but the lever lacks initial brake bite feel.

Braking

While the braking figures are decent, the front lever feels spongy. The bite is felt after the lever has been engaged more than halfway in. This takes some getting used to, especially when you want to quickly get on the brakes in an emergency.
