Honda is reviving the Prelude after almost two decades, confirming that it will become a production-ready hybrid coupe by 2026. Now being tested globally, the new Prelude is positioned as a driver-focused halo car rather than a hardcore performance model.

Built on the latest Civic platform, the new Prelude will have a 2.0-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain and feature a simulated manual-style gearbox, staying true to Honda’s enthusiast roots. Most design cues from the show car will reach production.

In India, the Prelude would function as a brand-building import alongside models like the upcoming ZR-V and 0 Series SUV.

Here are five key things to know about the 2026 Prelude:

Honda Prelude stays true to the classic 2-door GT shape

The new Honda Prelude retains the long-bonnet, low-roof profile that defined its predecessors. The surfacing is clean and aerodynamic, closely mirroring the concept previewed sometime back. A wider stance gives it a more modern, planted look.

Hybrid performance: Honda Prelude to use latest e:HEV tech

Honda has confirmed that the Prelude will get a hybrid powertrain built around its e:HEV architecture, the same electrified system that underpins the latest Civic and Accord. Expect strong mid-range torque and smooth electric assistance rather than outright Type R-style aggression. The focus is on everyday performance with efficiency, refinement and linear throttle response.

Simulated shifting: No manual gearbox, but Honda Prelude gets S+ Shift

The S+ Shift system with paddle shifters to deliver a manual-like thrill.

Honda has also clarified that the new Prelude will not get a manual gearbox. Instead, it introduces a new “S+ Shift” simulated manual system that mimics gear changes using software-controlled rev modulation. It won’t replace the feel of a true manual but aims to give enthusiasts a more engaging experience than a conventional hybrid drive, similar to the simulated shift functions seen in the latest Civic Hybrid.

Honda Prelude chassis to build on Civic and Type R learnings

The new Prelude will share its underpinnings with the latest-gen Civic.

Under the skin, the Honda Prelude is expected to use an evolved version of the Civic’s global architecture. That means a stiffer body, multi-link rear suspension and steering hardware honed from the same platform that supports the Civic Type R. However, the Prelude’s setup will lean more towards balance and stability than outright track performance, fitting its role as a road-biased GT.

Honda Prelude global debut in 2026

Prelude would be Honda’s first 2-door offering for India.

Honda is gearing up for a full production reveal of the Prelude in 2026, with the coupe set to join the brand’s international line-up soon after. The model would serve as a hybrid halo product, showcasing Honda’s hybrid technology and marking the return of an iconic nameplate. At an expected price point of Rs 80 lakh, the Prelude would appeal to a niche audience.
