I need an SUV or crossover under Rs 20 lakh on-road that can handle bad roads on a daily basis without major suspension issues and also deliver good mileage. I am open to both diesel and electric vehicle options.

We would recommend waiting for the new Renault Duster, whose launch is just a few weeks away, on March 17. Like the original Duster, it is expected to offer a tough yet comfortable suspension, and it has a whopping 212mm of ground clearance, which should keep it from bottoming out on bad roads. It comes with a choice of turbo-petrol engines - a 100hp 1.0-litre and 160hp 1.3-litre - both of which are understood to be quite fuel efficient.

However, if you can wait until Diwali, Renault is launching a strong hybrid version of the Duster that uses a 1.8-litre petrol engine, 1.4kWh battery and 49hp electric motor for a total of 160hp, and promises exceptional mileage. If you want a diesel option, check out the Tata Sierra diesel, and if you want an EV option, check out the Tata Nexon EV, both of which have robust suspension to tackle rough roads.

I am planning to purchase my first car and am a new driver, so I am also new to driving on the roads. Budget: Rs 15 lakh Need an automatic transmission I work in Delhi, but my hometown is in Uttarakhand. My usage will be around 60% city driving and 40% highway/hill runs. Overall running will still be around 1,000 km per month. Open to both EVs and petrol/diesel cars. I don't have a home charger, but there are common AC/DC chargers in my society and office. Which car should I choose? I like the Mahindra 3XO RevX A and Skoda Kylaq Prestige+. I would also like suggestions for EVs if there are any that fit my requirements. I am open to other options as well.

I currently own a 2020 Tata Nexon EV. I am happy with the EV experience, but I am not satisfied with Tata's service. I understand that the Nexon EV was an early product and that we were effectively guinea pigs at the time. Now that more EVs have matured, I want to know what options I should consider. My priorities are good range, comfort for a family of five, good boot space, physical buttons rather than a screen-heavy cabin like the Windsor, and good after-sales service. Given your experience with the Tata Nexon EV and your clear priorities, the Kia Syros EV seems to be the right fit. It is a sub-4-meter car with a surprisingly spacious cabin that can easily accommodate five passengers and their luggage. Go for the larger battery version that'll deliver healthy range, and you also have a good mix of physical buttons and touch keys, all logically laid out.Toyota does offer an electric car, the Ebella, but you could consider the Maruti Suzuki E Vitara instead, which is more value for money.

We would strongly advise against installing aftermarket CNG on any of these SUVs. All three – the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO and Scorpio N - are large, heavy vehicles with powerful turbocharged petrol engines. Fitting CNG to such engines is not recommended, as it can lead to drivability issues, increased wear and potential reliability concerns over time. More importantly, these SUVs are not designed with CNG in mind, and the installation can compromise safety and performance.If fuel economy is a top priority, opt for their diesel versions instead. The Mahindra and Tata offer strong torque, excellent highway efficiency and are well-suited to long-distance touring. If you are set on CNG, it is better to look at smaller, naturally aspirated petrol cars that are either factory-fitted or specifically designed for CNG use.Between the three, the XUV 7XO diesel would be our recommendation. It offers a more modern package, better ride comfort and a more premium cabin than the Scorpio N, while the Safari diesel is also a strong contender if you prefer Tata's design and feature set. But CNG should not be the deciding factor here.

We are planning to upgrade from a Hyundai i10 to an automatic petrol compact SUV under Rs 14 lakh. We have shortlisted the Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT and Skoda Kylaq Prestige AT. We liked the Venue, but we are not sure about the maintenance cost of its DCT gearbox.

Yes, dual-clutch automatic gearboxes are more complex and can be expensive to repair if something goes wrong. That said, the Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT is quite well-sorted. However, do keep in mind that if you drive a lot in stop-start traffic, it might not feel as smooth as a torque converter.The Skoda Kylaq AT uses a 6-speed torque converter automatic, which is far better suited to Indian conditions. It is smoother, and the Kylaq is more engaging to drive, with a strong turbo petrol engine and a well-balanced chassis. Overall, the Skoda car seems to be the safer and more sensible choice for you.
