Can you suggest a good Petrol automatic SUV within a 40 lakh to 50 lakh budget? Primarily for city driving, around 8000 km per year. The car should have good interiors and good resale after 4 years.

For a good petrol SUV in the Rs 40-50 lakh range, check out the Skoda Kodiaq. It comes in 5 and 7-seat guises and features a premium, high-quality and practical interior. Quality has taken a step up in this new-gen model compared to the outgoing Kodiaq, and fit and finish are now on par with luxury cars. It may look large on the outside, but it's actually quite easy to manoeuvre, and moreover, its 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine is smooth and refined.
Alternatively, you can check out the Audi Q3. It's not as large as the Skoda, but since you plan to use it primarily in the city, and if you don't have a need for the added space, it could be beneficial. It has better badge value too, which should help resale value compared to the Skoda, and though it uses the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, its smaller size means fuel efficiency should be a bit better, as well as performance.

The 1.5-litre engine is also very refined and responsive, while being reasonably fuel efficient for a vehicle in this segment.As your only family car, you will appreciate the spacious and comfortable rear seat and the generous 458-litre boot space. If you are looking for more features, also consider the Kia Seltos IVT, though you may need to stretch your budget a bit.On your test drive, spend 10 minutes crawling at 5-10kph to see if throttle response and performance is to your liking. Also, check that the steering feels light and the cabin remains comfortable for your long commutes.

For your requirements, we'd recommend not an SUV or a sedan, but the Toyota Innova Hycross ZX(O) Hybrid. In your 40‑lakh range, it combines Toyota's famous longevity and reliability, the safety net of 6 airbags and ADAS, and outstanding long‑distance comfort for equal city and highway use. Toyota’s hybrid MPV has an 8‑year/1,60,000km battery warranty and 10,000km/12‑month service intervals. For your 50:50 city-highway split, the smooth e‑CVT is smooth around town and the steering light, with the e-motor doing a good percentage of the propulsion, which of course also keeps efficiency high. And surprisingly, on the highway, it still uses a lot of e-power, making sure the 2.0-litre petrol engine never feels overwhelmed. It's spacious, of course, and comfortable too - far more than its ladder-frame counterpart, the Crysta. If the MPV body style is not for you, and you're not in a huge hurry, Kia is expected to launch its premium SUV, the Sorento, which could also get a strong hybrid powertrain; it might be worth waiting for.

Pick the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi AT, which costs around Rs 13.7 lakh on-road. The Brezza has a refined 103hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic, which has a claimed efficiency of 19.8kpl. The Brezza also has one of the most roomiest back seats in the segment, and it has a substantial 328 litre boot. With a ground clearance of 198mm, it won't be an issue for you on your drives in hilly areas. Being a Maruti, service reach is wide, and you'll also appreciate the familiarity with your current S-Cross. The one thing you give up is a strong mid‑range punch; the 1.5 petrol feels a bit underpowered, so uphill overtakes with 4 adults may need a downshift and some planning.Alternatively, if you want a CVT gearbox, stronger performance and more boot space, consider the Nissan Magnite CVT.
