I am a first-time car buyer with a budget of around Rs 10-12 lakh. I want a car with good ground clearance, a reliable engine and gearbox, and good mileage. My usage will be split roughly 50:50 between city and highway driving. Which car should I consider?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. The ZXi MT variant sits right in your budget, offers good ground clearance for bad roads and speed breakers, and Maruti’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is one of the most reliable and efficient units in the segment, and its new 1.0 turbo petrol engine is equally good.
The gearbox is smooth and easy to use, which is important for a first-time buyer, and the car is comfortable both in the city and on the highway. This Maruti Suzuki car is also a genuinely practical 5-seater with a decent boot. It may not be the most feature-rich car in the segment, but it gets the basics right and is a car you can keep for a long time without worry.
However, if you want even better value for money, check out the Nissan Magnite. It's only slightly less spacious than the Brezza, but you get far more features at the price, and its 1.0-litre petrol and turbo petrol engines are incredibly efficient and reliable. The best part is you can even get an auto gearbox in your budget with this car, which should make things more convenient. We recommend the Magnite Tekna 1.0 Turbo CVT variant, which should fit in your budget.
