I have two dogs and want to take road trips of up to five hours. Ideally, I want a vehicle where the rear seats either can be removed or the backrests can fold flat to fit a mattress. What car or SUV would you recommend, including both EV and internal combustion engine options?

We would recommend a three-row vehicle, as there are very few cars in which the second row of seats folds flat or can be removed. Two cars in which you can remove the third row of seats to liberate a large flat area are the Renault Triber and the Citroen Aircross X. Both are great options that offer comfortable rides and great space efficiency. The Aircross X is larger, more powerful and from a segment above, but the Triber is more affordable. Also it has a lower boot lip height, which will make entry and exits easier for your dogs. All things considered, though, the best all-round option for you is the Kia Carens Clavis, though it is more expensive than the aforementioned two. Not only is it a much better-rounded vehicle with more powertrain options (including an EV), it's also the most practical. It has a flat folding third row, which on its own frees up lots of space. Moreover, if you need more still, the second row will fold near-flat in the 7-seat version. You should be able to fit a mattress for your dogs with a bit of folding.

I’m looking to buy a new SUV. I’m 6’4” and headroom as a driver is crucial. With a budget of ₹15-18 lakh, I’m looking for an SUV with good mileage for weekend highway drives, preferably diesel manual, and reliable.

At the lower end of the price range, there's the Kia Syros. It's got a very spacious cabin and should accommodate you in reasonable comfort. It's got a refined diesel engine that delivers reasonable power and good fuel economy. At the upper end of the price range, you could look at the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It's got an airy cabin and a high roof, so it should fit your requirements. However, many of us did find that the driver's seat doesn't go down as low as we'd like, and this is something you are advised to check for yourself. In terms of engine performance, the XUV 7XO's 2.2-litre diesel unit is great, delivering ample power for highway drives. If you are open to the MPV body style, the Kia Carens Clavis is also worth a look. It's got a relatively high roof, which should put you at ease. Its diesel engine is also pleasant, offering fair performance with good refinement.

My budget is between 20 and 23 lakh, and I am looking for a good SUV that offers strong road presence and comfortable driving ergonomics for a 6-foot-tall driver.

While there are a lot of SUV options that fall within your budget, we've listed the top models worth checking out. Among the monocoque-bodied SUV options, there's Tata's Harrier and Safari, and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. These SUVs are large and have great road presence. Also, being monocoque SUVs, they score well on comfort and refinement. If you are looking for something more hardcore, there's the option of Mahindra's ladder frame SUVs, namely the Scorpio N and Thar Roxx. These SUVs are big on image and have a toughness about them that's very appealing. However, they are not as comfortable as the models listed above.

I have a budget of around ₹30 lakh and am more inclined towards a sedan rather than an SUV, but currently there are no good options. Are there any expected this year?

Sadly, there are no all-new Rs 25-30 lakh sedans lined up for launch this year. However, slightly lower down the price ladder, we will see the launch of updated versions of the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus over the year. There's way more choice for the same budget in SUVs with options spanning petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV powertrains as well as with two and three rows of seating, and 4x2 and 4x4.
