I live in Ahmedabad, and I am looking to upgrade my car. I currently drive a Honda W-RV Petrol manual. I am looking to upgrade to a C-segment SUV. I drive about 80 km every day within the city. While commuting in Ahmedabad is not as hectic as in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, it still gets pretty hectic, especially during peak hours. My second car is a Tiago EV. I am fine with any engine option. Reliability and spaciousness are my primary concerns. The budget is somewhere near the 20 lakh mark. Please guide me.

@autocar.india Seltos was on my list, but I am confused wether I should go for a diesel or petrol or should I completely go for something like a Sierra EV? Also, would it be better if I waited until Seltos Hybrid comes out?

@dhairya.01 Skip the Sierra EV and don't wait for the Seltos Hybrid either. You can simply go for the Seltos Diesel as it offers excellent fuel efficiency, effortless performance for both city and highway driving, and has a proven ownership record.

Get the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid, because it runs the same Toyota hybrid system as the Hyryder, and you already like its face more. With 1,500 km a month, the strong hybrid’s electric assist in city traffic will save you big money on fuel, and this benefit is identical in both cars since the engine-motor-battery package is Toyota’s in each.Pick the Grand Vitara if design and a bigger service network matter. Maruti dealers are everywhere, parts are easy to source, and you’ll often find better discounts. The Hyryder doesn’t give you extra efficiency or durability just because it has a Toyota badge - the hybrid hardware and driving feel are nearly the same.One thing to keep in mind: Toyota usually enjoys slightly stronger resale in some cities, and its standard warranty terms can be a touch more generous, so check local offers. Hi sir, I have a dilemma. I own three cars: Toyota Innova 2008 V model, 150,000 km covered and it is in mint condition. Maruti Suzuki Swift 2012 ZDi that has covered 165,000 km , but recently restored to factory specifications at a cost higher than the car's current market value. I also own a Kia Seltos GT Line Plus 2020 that has covered only 6,000 km. I am planning to upgrade. Should I sell the Innova and upgrade to the Toyota Hycross? Would it be wiser to sell both the Innova and the Swift and buy a Kia Carnival? Or should I continue driving these three cars for one more year and wait for the Toyota Hycross facelift? My monthly commute is around 2,000 km, and I prefer a comfortable 7-seater for highway runs.

Sell the Innova and buy the Innova HyCross hybrid now, and keep the Swift and Seltos. Your 2,000 km a month will be far cheaper to run in the HyCross than in a big diesel like the Carnival, and it still gives you a comfy 7 seater with captain seats that is easy to drive long distance.Carnival only makes sense if you regularly carry six or seven adults with lots of luggage and want a true lounge on wheels. It is lovely, but it is huge, pricier to buy, and will drink more fuel on your kind of usage.Waiting a year for a HyCross facelift is not worth it unless you want a specific new feature. Toyota facelifts are usually small changes and prices rarely go down, while you lose a year of savings and comfort.

The smooth hybrid makes city drives effortless and quiet, and on broken roads, it just takes the abuse without rattling everyone. Your 20 percent off-road sounds like rough trails rather than rock crawling, and the HyCross will handle that sort of bad-road stuff better than you expect. But, the Innova isn't particularly fun to drive.If you really crave driver fun, the Kodiaq is the one that puts a smile on your face. The 2-litre turbo petrol and AWD make it genuinely enjoyable on highways and hills and the cabin feels richer. Two catches, though. It likely stretches past Rs. 40 lakh on-road in most cities, and its third row is tighter, and you have to be a bit careful off the beaten path.The Fortuner petrol is the most capable off-road, but for 80 per cent on-road use, it feels heavy and bouncy, the steering is not friendly in town, and it guzzles fuel.

Pick the Maruti Fronx turbo within your Rs. 12 lakh budget, because it stays easy to park in the city yet feels secure on a 900 km run with enough room for five. The 1.0 turbo has decent mid-range for quick overtakes, and the suspension is absorbent and yet keeps the car steady at highway speeds. If you are opting for the automatic, then the Fronx torque converter auto is a very smooth unit and will make life much easier in the city.If you want an even smaller, lighter car with lower running costs, go for the Maruti Swift. It is smooth in the city, easy on fuel, has a usable boot for three, and will cruise comfortably at 100. It can take five in a pinch, but it will feel tight on shoulder room and lack the highway punch of the turbo Fronx.

Coming from a Ritz, the driving position and light controls will feel natural, and the cabin is roomier, so family runs are easier too.The Verna is a strong second option if you want a sharper look and extra features. The 1.5 petrol with the automatic is smooth enough, but the turbo with the automatic can feel a bit snappy in stop-go, which takes away from that easy driving you want.If your priority is a relaxed, fuss-free sedan for city use with occasional highway trips, go City. It just feels effortless.
