I own a Mahindra XUV 3XO MPFi Petrol, and I mainly use it for city driving. However, I'm getting only around 7-8 kmpl in the city. Should I consider installing a CNG kit in the car?

We wouldn't recommend installing an aftermarket CNG kit on your Mahindra XUV 3XO MPFi Petrol. While it may significantly reduce your running costs, there are a few important compromises to consider. An aftermarket CNG conversion can affect your manufacturer's warranty, reduce boot space and may also impact long-term reliability and refinement if the installation isn't carried out to a very high standard.

We'd be even more cautious when it comes to turbo-petrol engines. Unless the CNG system has been developed and validated by the OEM, we generally don't recommend fitting one. Turbo-petrol engines are more complex to calibrate for CNG, and an aftermarket installation may not deliver the same levels of drivability, performance and reliability as a factory-engineered solution. Tata is one of the few manufacturers currently offering a factory-fitted CNG option with a turbo-petrol engine on the Nexon, and that has been engineered from the outset to work with CNG.

A city's fuel efficiency of 7-8kpl is on the lower side, but if your driving is predominantly in heavy stop-start traffic, it isn't entirely unexpected. Before considering a CNG conversion, we'd recommend getting the car inspected at the service centre to ensure there are no underlying issues. Also check that the tyre pressures are correct and review your driving style, as these can have a noticeable impact on fuel economy.

@gagankhurana After driving the XUV 3XO, I felt it is powerful and fun to drive in city but the city + highway mixed mileage around 14 kmpl I got 3xo AX5 manual petrol only but I prefer automatic transmission DCT over manual because clutch is not that smooth in 3xo each gear shift is clearly felt.

I am planning on buying a car under 17 lakh (on-the-road). I prefer a diesel manual as around 65-70 percent driving is on highway. I was planning to buy the seltos, but am worried about the DPF, AC compressor and after-sales in the long run.

The Seltos diesel is a good car, but your budget will only get you a lower variant. Since your usage involves 65-70 percent drives on the highway, the DPF isn't likely to get clogged, and the car is likely to serve you well.If you want a car that's fully-loaded with features consider the sub-4-meter Kia offering - Syros diesel, which uses the same 1.5-diesel engine and manual gearbox as the Seltos. A Mahindra XUV 3XO is another credible alternative - the engine is strong, the gearbox is smooth, and it is genuinely enjoyable to drive on the highway. It is also one of the most spacious compact SUVs, with a wide cabin that makes it a comfortable five-seater for long journeys.

Coming from a Ford EcoSport, you are used to a compact SUV with a strong driving character and a solid, well-built feel. In the Rs 10-12 lakh range, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the closest modern equivalent. It offers a strong turbo petrol engine, a wide cabin that comfortably seats five, and a genuinely enjoyable driving experience. The Skoda Kylaq also offers a similarly engaging driving experience, a larger boot and a more premium feel inside. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza Turbo is also worth considering - it is not as exciting to drive as the 3XO or Kylaq, but it is reliable, easy to live with, will be more fuel efficiency, and it is backed by Maruti's strong network.

I want to buy a new diesel car under Rs. 15 lakh for my family and official tours. Please suggest.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. It is one of the few diesel options left under Rs 15 lakh, and it is well suited to your use. The diesel engine is punchy, efficient and well suited to highway driving, while the car itself is spacious enough for family duties and comfortable enough for long journeys. It also offers a good balance of features, safety and value for money. If you want something slightly more premium and are willing to stretch your budget a little, the Kia Seltos diesel is also worth considering, but the 3XO remains the stronger value proposition in this price range.
