Currently, I own a Grand i10 petrol manual. My annual running is between 8,000 to 10,000 km within Ahmedabad and on highways. Now, I am planning to buy a new family diesel car under a budget of 13-15 lakh. My requirement is an automatic compact SUV car.

With 8,000-10,000 km a year and a mix of Ahmedabad city and highway driving, a diesel automatic might not be the best financial decision. At this running, the fuel savings from diesel are unlikely to offset the higher purchase price over your ownership period. Modern petrol automatics are likely to be more suited to your usage pattern.

In case you still want to go ahead with a diesel-automatic car, in your Rs 13-15 lakh budget, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best fit. It offers a strong turbo diesel engine mated to a 6-speed AMT, and a comfortable ride, making it well suited to both city driving and highway runs. It is also one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment, with a wide rear seat that makes it a genuinely comfortable family car. The only drawback is that the boot is on the smaller side, but for most family needs it is still adequate.

You could also consider the Kia Sonet diesel-automatic. It has a smoother transmission, and is available across a wider price range, across multiple variants. Overall, the Sonet, although due for a generation change next year, is still a very sophisticated, competent compact SUV on sale.

I recently bought a Tata Safari Stealth Black Accomplished+ and am very happy with its performance. It returns around 13kpl in the city and 14-15kpl on the highway. I also own a Maruti Suzuki Ritz diesel VDi, which I have used for 10 years and driven 2.3 lakh km with regular servicing and genuine synthetic oil. Is it time to replace the Ritz? If so, what would be a good diesel or petrol car around Rs 15 lakh? My usage is a mix of city and highway driving, around 75-100 km a day. I also have three older family members above 60 who will use the car occasionally. I am considering the 1.0-litre Skoda, the new Thar 1.5-litre and other options. Both the Kylaq and the Kushaq use it, and either suits an enthusiast far better than the Thar. The engine is eager, the steering is sharp, and the chassis feels planted when you push it. Those are the things you'll value as someone who drives on track.The catch is your mileage. At 75-100 km a day, you'll cover close to 30,000km a year, and the petrol Skoda will cost noticeably more to run than a diesel. If that bothers you, test-drive the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. Its 1.5 diesel is one of the punchiest in its class; it has a roomy rear seat for your parents, and it'll be much cheaper to run, though it isn't as sharp to drive as the Skoda.The new Mahindra Thar isn't a good fit. I’m getting the following on-road deals: XUV 3XO AX5: Rs 13.5 lakh Creta EX(O): Rs 17 lakh (may be Rs 16.5 lakh) Both are petrol automatics. Is it worth stretching my budget for the Creta EX(O)? Is it advisable to wait for upcoming launches, or are there any other current alternatives I should consider? I’m not interested in fancy features like a sunroof, etc.

At Rs 13.5 lakh on-road, it gives you everything you've asked for: a smooth automatic, strong safety, and a roomy cabin, and keeps you comfortably within budget. Its 1.2 turbo-petrol engine is paired with a proper torque-converter automatic, which is smooth in town and relaxed on the highway. This Mahindra car also has a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, and its wide cabin seats five better than most compact SUVs. The one weak spot is the boot, which is small.Stretching to the Hyundai Creta EX(O) only makes sense if you need the extra space. It's a size up, with a roomier rear seat and a bigger boot. But that's Rs 3-3.5 lakh more for a lower-spec variant, and an all-new Creta is due next year. If this Hyundai car appeals, wait for the new one rather than buying the current one now.

At your budget, the automatics available are mostly the AMTs (automated manual transmission), which are cost-effective and efficient but a bit jerky during the shifts. This can be a bother in traffic, and given that most of your driving is in the city, we would recommend that you avoid these. A good option would be the Honda Amaze; it comes with a CVT transmission, which is smoother than AMTs, and the car meets your other criteria of reliability, safety and mileage very well. You could consider the XUV 3XO too, which has a torque converter gearbox and is the smoothest type of autobox around. It's also a very safe car; however, the mileage would not be very high.

My current ride is a Fluidic Verna diesel manual, which is nearing 15 years of ownership and has clocked nearly 2.5 lakh km. My usage consists of mixed city and highway driving, with around 40km daily and weekend highway runs of about 400km. I currently drive a 2018 Hyundai Creta 1.6 petrol automatic, which is very comfortable. Its mileage is around 7-8 kpl, and my monthly running is 1,000-1,200 km. Please advise on a good vehicle with decent mileage and comfort. I look forward to your advice.

Hello, I want to upgrade from my current Dzire diesel (2009 model). My running is nearly 7 thousand which is very low. My budget is 10 lakh mostly within city driven but with few highway trips every quarter. So please suggest some reliable comfortable car. I have taken the test drive of Maruti Suzuki Fronx AGS but space in the back is also an issue. I have also taken the test drive of Brezza Turbo and I found it smooth and easy . Anything else I should go for ?

With just around 7,000km a year, mostly in the city, a simple petrol car makes much more sense than a diesel. Since you have already driven the Brezza and found it smooth and easy to drive, it would be my first choice. The new 1.0 litre Booster jet is refined, has good low speed tractability and is more than adequate for your occasional highway trips. We also found it impressively efficient, with the onboard computer showing 11 to 14kpl even during hard driving.One important point, though: the new Brezza 1.0 Turbo is manual only. If you are looking for an automatic, the 1.5 litre petrol is still the only Brezza powertrain with an automatic, and that pushes the price beyond your Rs. 10 lakh budget.
