Hi Autocar Team, first of all, I would like to thank you for your excellent service. I own a Tata Tigor CNG AMT, purchased in 2024. At the time of purchase, my expected usage was quite high, which is why I chose this model. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, my usage has now reduced significantly to around 50 km per month or even less. The car has been driven approximately 12,000 km so far, mainly due to a few trips and family events. There are also periods when the car is not used at all for 4–6 weeks continuously. I am concerned about whether such low and irregular usage could negatively impact the car’s long-term health, especially since I plan to keep it for many years. Could you please advise: Whether keeping the car with such low usage is advisable What precautions or maintenance steps I should follow Or whether it would be better to consider selling the car under these circumstances

For your situation, there is no need to worry or consider selling the car. Your current usage of around 50 km per month, even with 4-6 weeks of no driving, is not harmful as long as you follow some basic precautions.

Modern cars like your Tata Tigor CNG AMT can handle low usage, but they do need to be run periodically to stay healthy. The main things affected by long idle periods are the battery, tyres and fluids, not the engine itself.

You should make it a point to drive the car once every 2-3 weeks for about 15-20 minutes, and occasionally run it on petrol as well, not just CNG. It is also important to stick to annual servicing, even if the running is very low, and keep an eye on battery condition and tyre pressure.

There is no real downside to keeping the car, apart from following basic maintenance. Selling it now does not make financial sense either, since the major depreciation has already happened and replacing it will only add more cost.

Overall, it is perfectly fine to continue using your current car, and with simple care, it will remain reliable for many years.

I own a 2019 Mahindra XUV500 diesel automatic and currently use regular diesel. I am considering switching to premium diesel fuel. Could you please advise whether using premium diesel would provide any benefits in terms of performance, mileage, or engine health?

For your 2019 Mahindra XUV500 diesel automatic, you can confidently continue using regular diesel. Modern BS6 diesel available today is already of high quality, and your engine is designed to run optimally on standard fuel.Premium diesel mainly contains additives like detergents and slightly higher cetane, which can help in keeping injectors cleaner and may offer a marginal improvement in smoothness. However, in real-world usage, the difference is usually very small and often not noticeable, especially if your car is running well. For a well-maintained engine, using premium diesel regularly will not deliver significant gains in performance, mileage, or longevity to justify the higher cost.

Suggest a car under ₹10 lakh. My requirements are at least 350 litres of boot space, comfort for all passengers, rear AC vents, cruise control, awesome stability on highways, and low outside noise in the cabin. My running is 40% city and 60% highway, including hills. I am planning to upgrade from an i10 1.1 iRDE2, which delivers around 12-14kpl fuel efficiency in the city and 17-19kpl on highways. So fuel efficiency should be more or less similar. I am not prepared for a major drop.

We would recommend you look at the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. You will need to opt for the top-end ZXi Plus model, which is right around your budget and will come equipped with the features you want, such as cruise control and rear AC vents. The car is also fairly spacious at the front or the rear, though taller folks - those nearer to 6 feet, will fit headroom tight. The Dzire's fuel efficiency is very good, in our standard tests, the manual car returned 14.5kpl in the city and 20kpl in our highway cycle, while the automatic returned 11.6kpl in the city and 19.22kpl on the highway. Thus, your requirement for fuel efficiency will also be met. Ride and stability at highway speeds are also good, and boot space stands at 382 litres, which is more than your stated requirement, though the wheel wells do intrude a fair bit, and the rear seats do not fold down; thus, examine this closely to see if it meets your requirements.

I own a 2013 Verna Fluidic. Is it right to upsize tyres from 195/55 R16 to 205/55 R16? Are there any rubbing issues reported on upsizing in the Fluidic Verna?

Yes, on your 2013 Verna Fluidic, upsizing from 195/55 R16 to 205/55 R16 is acceptable. It adds only about 11 mm in overall diameter (≈1.8%), and rubbing is uncommon on stock rims. This upsize widens the tread by 10 mm for better grip and rim protection, while the sidewall grows by about 5.5 mm, which can help over rough patches. The speedometer change is small (≈1.8% under-read: indicated 100 ≈ 101.8 actual). On the OE 16-inch alloy (typically 6J; check the J size stamped inside), the 205/55 fits within the wheel arch on stock suspension, and owners rarely report contact unless offsets or spacers are changed. Ground clearance effectively increases by about 5-6 mm, which the Verna’s wheel wells can accommodate. The one thing you give up is perfect speedometer accuracy; with 205/55 R16, your speedo will under-read by around 1.8%, so indicated 100 kph is roughly 101.8 kph actual. If you frequently drive with 5 adults plus luggage or have bulky aftermarket mudflaps, consider staying with 195/55 R16 and choosing a grippier tyre model (for example, Continental UC6) instead. When fitting, ask the shop to trial-mount one 205/55 R16, turn full lock both ways, and then with 3 adults in the rear roll slowly over a 70-80 mm speed breaker. Listen and look for any liner or strut contact and verify there’s at least 5 mm clearance.
