I am confused between the Innova Crysta VX, Innova HyCross VX, and Kia Carens Clavis Diesel AT. The car will mainly be used by my aged parents, replacing our 2011 Ritz diesel. It will be driven 99% of the time by our regular driver, and occasionally by me. It will mostly be used as a 5-seater, with occasional use as a 7-seater.

The Toyota Innova Hycross is a petrol-hybrid MPV, so it was never going to feel as powerful as a diesel. The Tata Safari, while offering good torque, isn't the most responsive diesel SUV in its segment.The Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel is the option we would recommend. It is one of the most powerful diesel SUVs in its segment, with strong mid-range performance and a genuinely engaging driving experience. The Kia Carens Clavis is essentially a more modern, updated and better-equipped version of the Carens. Also, with the Clavis, you have a lot more options as far as variants and powertrain options go. The Carens is essentially a more affordable, stripped-down pre-updated version of the Clavis, and while it offers good value, it does not feel as premium as the Clavis.We would have recommended the Kia Carens had you been on a really tight budget, because both Clavis and Carens are the same car underneath the skin. They both share their 1.5 NA Petrol and Diesel engines; both are identical as far as cabin space and comfort go, and the service experience and costs are likely to be identical as well. However, since you have a healthy Rs 17 lakh budget, we'd advise you to get a well-equipped variant of the Clavis instead.

You are overthinking the ethanol issue. Modern petrol engines are engineered to handle E20, and there is no official roadmap beyond that. The impact is largely limited to a small drop in fuel efficiency, and there is no need to change your buying decision because of it. CNG car only makes sense if your running is high enough to justify the lower running costs, and you are comfortable with the compromises in boot space and performance.Between the two cars, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG is the safer long-term choice. Maruti's service network is wider, ownership is generally more hassle-free, and the Brezza is a well-rounded, reliable SUV. The Tata Nexon CNG is the more feature-rich option and the spare tyre is a genuine advantage, but Tata's service experience can still be inconsistent depending on the city, so opt for it only if the dealer network in your area is good.If you were otherwise happy with a naturally aspirated petrol, go for the Brezza petrol and do not let the ethanol debate sway your decision.
