My father-in-law is nearing 60 and is planning to upgrade to an automatic car with a maximum budget of ₹15 lakh. He is currently driving a 10-year-old Swift VDI and is looking for a comfortable, reliable, and value-for-money automatic car for long-term use. Currently, we have shortlisted Maruti Brezza VXI / ZXI Automatic and Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT. We would appreciate suggestions on which would be the better option considering comfort, ease of driving, maintenance, reliability, and overall value for money for senior citizens.

Since you're looking for an easy, comfortable automatic car under Rs. 15 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT is the one you should be looking at. It is very easy to drive in traffic thanks to the light controls, the torque converter automatic shifts smoothly, and the tall seat makes getting in and out easy for a 60-year-old. The ride is calm over broken roads, so daily runs and longer trips feel less tiring. Maruti’s wide service network and low part costs also make life easier over 8-10 years, and resale is usually strong.

Two things to note: it is not the quickest thanks to the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that puts out just 103hp, and if the ZXI is over your budget in your city, you'll have to settle for the VXI automatic that will feel a bit basic inside. Pick the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT only if he wants stronger pull and more features for the money. Overall, for comfort, ease, low upkeep and trust, go for the Brezza automatic.

The Hyundai Venue HX 5+ 1.0 Turbo Petrol MT would be the first recommendation. It is easy to drive, has a well-sorted turbo-petrol engine, a strong service network and a proven ownership experience. For a first-time buyer, Hyundai's wider and more consistent aftersales support is a significant advantage. It is also easier to live with on a daily basis than some rivals.The Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5 MT would be the second choice. It offers stronger performance, a wider cabin and feels more substantial on the road. However, its boot space is relatively small for family travel, which could become a limitation on occasional holiday trips with luggage. While Mahindra's service network has improved considerably, Hyundai still enjoys an edge in reach and consistency.One other option worth considering is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza Manual. Its naturally aspirated petrol engine may not feel as punchy or exciting as the turbocharged Venue or 3XO, and it is not as feature-rich either. In daily use, it will return much better mileage than the Mahindra XUV 3XO turbo automatic, especially in city traffic where the Maruti’s 1.5 and mild-hybrid tune are kinder on fuel. Its steering is lighter and smoother at low speeds, so parking and tight lanes feel easier. And over years, Maruti service and parts usually work out cheaper, so maintenance is friendlier on the wallet.You will get a 360 camera in these trims, so that box is ticked either way.The one reason to pick the XUV 3XO AX5L AT is if you value stronger performance for highway overtakes and a more tech feel. The Mahindra’s turbo motor and the automatic feel livelier, but you pay at the pump.If your priority stack is mileage, low upkeep and an easy, smooth steer, go Brezza. If you want punch and features first, go 3XO.

The XUV 3XO offers the best balance of performance, features, cabin space and value. Its torque converter automatic is smoother and better suited to daily city traffic than the Venue's DCT, while the wider cabin and more accommodating rear seat make it a more family friendly option. The only notable drawback is that boot space is not as generous as some rivals.The Skoda Kylaq Signature Plus AT comes next. It is the most enjoyable to drive, with excellent ride and handling balance, and its torque converter automatic is well suited to urban conditions. However, it is not as spacious as the XUV 3XO and does not offer the same level of equipment for the price.The Hyundai Venue HX6 DCT is the easiest car to own thanks to Hyundai's extensive service network and strong feature list. However the DCT gearbox would not be the preferred choice for a buyer spending most of their time in heavy city traffic.

You should go for the Mahindra XEV 9S. It's a proper three-row EV, and it fits your use case perfectly. With home solar charging, your running costs are very low, and the smooth, quiet drive is just right for city runs as a 4-seater. When you do need six or seven seats, the third row is reasonably spacious, and for your 500 km trip every couple of months, you’ll need just one quick top-up at a highway charger.Do note that with all three rows up, boot space is tight, so your highway trips will require some planning.Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis EV. It isn't as feature-rich and doesn't have as much range as the XEV 9S, but its third row is more comfortable for adults.

I am planning to purchase a new automatic car and am confused between the Honda Amaze ZX CVT and the Skoda Kylaq Signature Plus AT. My usage will be around 90% city driving, primarily for office commuting between Dwarka, Delhi and my office near IFFCO Chowk, Gurugram (approximately 25 km one way). However, I will not be driving daily, as I often use the Metro as well. The car will also be driven by my 69-year-old father, so ease of driving, comfort, visibility, ingress/egress, and reliability are important considerations. Our previous car was an Alto K10 Manual, so this will be our first automatic car and a significant upgrade. Considering my usage pattern, family profile and the fact that we intend to keep the car for a long period for around 10 years, which of these two would you recommend?

Based on your requirement, we would recommend the Honda Amaze ZX CVT over the Skoda Kylaq Signature+ AT. The reason is that your priorities are not outright performance or driving excitement. You are looking for a car that will spend 90% of its life in city traffic, will also be driven by your 69-year-old father, and is expected to stay with the family for around 10 years. In that context, Amaze's strengths line up perfectly with your requirements. The CVT is smoother than the Kylaq's torque converter automatic in stop-and-go traffic, visibility is excellent, the car is easy to place on the road, ingress and egress are straightforward, and Honda's long-term reliability record is hard to fault. Coming from an Alto K10, it will already feel like a substantial upgrade in comfort, refinement and features.The Kylaq Signature Plus AT is the more desirable car from an enthusiast's perspective. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol has more punch, the higher seating position is nice, and the overall package feels more substantial. However, it is also a larger vehicle to manoeuvre, and while the automatic is good, it is not quite as seamless in everyday traffic as Honda's CVT.Another point in Amaze's favour is that the ZX variant gets Honda Sensing ADAS, which adds useful safety features without making the car complicated to operate. Since your father will also be driving it, that extra layer of safety is a nice bonus.

I am planning to buy an automatic car for my family and am confused between the Kia Sonet and the Skoda Kylaq. Could you please advise which one would be the better choice and explain the pros and cons of each?

Skoda Kylaq is the better family automatic, mainly because it gives you a bit more cabin and boot space and a calmer ride over bad roads. It feels more secure at highway speeds with a full load, and its turbo engine with the automatic pulls cleanly, so hills and quick overtakes are easy even with the AC on. The petrol Kylaq automatic uses a torque convertor gearbox which is also smoother than the dual clutch unit on the Sonet so it would fare better in city traffic. Kia Sonet makes sense if you want more features and need Kia’s service reach which is wider. For weekend trips with four on board it will do the job too, but rear seat width and long-journey comfort are not its strong points and within a year it will get a major update, thus buying it now would not be ideal.
