I own a Honda City 4th Generation and have been getting an average fuel efficiency of 16.1 km/l over 85,000 km. Would it be worth installing a CNG kit to improve the mileage further? Please suggest.

With the kind of mileage you are already seeing from your 4th generation Honda City, I would not rush to fit a CNG kit. Around 16 kpl over 85,000 km is actually a healthy real world figure for a petrol sedan, and since the City is known for its smoothness and refinement, adding an aftermarket CNG kit will inevitably change the character of the car. Honda does not offer a factory CNG option for the City, so any retrofit will be third party, which means compromises in boot space, some loss in outright performance and the added variable of installation quality and long term reliability. Honda also recommends using fuel that meets the vehicle specifications, and aftermarket modifications can complicate warranty or support considerations on newer cars.

A CNG conversion only starts making strong financial sense if your running is very high and you plan to keep the car for several more years to recover the kit cost. If your annual usage is moderate, the payback period can be longer than expected. The only real case for going CNG here is if fuel cost reduction is your absolute top priority. Otherwise, given how well your City is already performing, I would leave it as is and enjoy the refinement rather than fixing something that is not really broken.

CNG fitted by honda is 3rd party and if anything goes work or any additional repairs then you have high chances of loosing your warranty. This is very risky .

I own a 2021 4th gen city (petrol) I'm getting around 10-11 in city and 12-13 on highways, especially in hill stations it drops down to less than 9kmpl

I am currently using my dad's Maruti Ritz and wish to upgrade to a more premium sedan or SUV. My current shortlist includes the Toyota Hyryder Strong Hybrid, Skoda Slavia, and Honda City e:HEV. Several thoughts and concerns keep coming to mind regarding each vehicle. The Hyryder is not a proper SUV, and its 3-cylinder engine has more vibration than 4-cylinder engines. The Slavia's 4-cylinder engine is giving single-digit fuel efficiency, especially with the E20 fuel concerns. I am also worried about the long-term maintenance of its turbo engine. The City e:HEV is priced above Rs. 20 lakh, attracting luxury tax, and its on-road price goes beyond Rs. 25 lakh. I am not sure whether the cost-benefit equation will work in favour of the City. The Slavia facelift is also around the corner. I wish to keep my next car for at least 10 years.

The Skoda Slavia is a great driver's car with a smooth 4-cylinder engine, an extremely practical cabin and strong performance, but if efficiency is a high priority, it is best to stick to the strong hybrid. The Slavia will receive an update soon, which will also feature a new gearbox which replaces the earlier Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque converter (AQ250) with a newer Aisin 8-speed torque converter (AQ300). This will be exclusive to the 1.0-litre engine and will be a bit more efficient too. However, in comparison to a strong hybrid, nothing really comes close. Overall, the Hyryder Strong Hybrid offers the best balance of efficiency, reliability and ownership experience for your needs.

I have a pre-owned 2020 Kia Seltos GTX+ AT 1.4 Turbo as my 2nd car. One issue I see with this is poor low-end torque, and I end up revving too hard when moving uphill in back-to-back traffic. The car has about 48K on the Odo. Any advice? I had it checked at Spinny (where I bought it), and they told me the DCT is ok. Can you confirm if the low-end torque on this engine/ model is a common issue?

Yes, what you are experiencing is a known characteristic of the 1.4 turbo petrol DCT combination in the Seltos. Being a turbo-petrol engine, you need to rev the engine a bit for the turbos to spool, and that combined with a DCT that's tuned for efficiency rather than aggressive low-speed response, can make it feel a bit laggy at low revs. In stop-start traffic on inclines, the gearbox could feel slow to engage and hesitant. This is not a sign of a faulty gearbox, but rather a limitation of the DCT calibration in this application.The best way to manage this is to use the manual mode on the gearbox when you are in slow-moving traffic on an incline. By holding the car in a lower gear, you can keep the engine in its torque band and avoid the hesitation you are experiencing. You can also use the hill hold function and the brakes to control the car rather than relying on the throttle alone.If this is a major concern for you, the only real solution is to switch to a car with a torque converter or CVT gearbox, which are much smoother at low speeds. But if you are otherwise happy with the car, this is something you can manage with driving technique.

Given your priorities, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best fit. It has the most comfortable ride in the segment, with a suspension that deals with broken roads and potholes better than the Brezza or Nexon.
