The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced a revision in the registration renewal fee for four- and two-wheelers that are 20 years old or older. The government is looking to curb air pollution further and is looking to curb the use of cars and bikes made before 2005, which do not meet BS II emission norms. It should be noted that cars and bikes aged between 15 and 20 years see no change in the registration renewal fee.

  1. Registration renewal for 20-year-old cars increases to Rs 10,000
  2. Registration renewal for 20-year-old two-wheelers increases to Rs 2,000

The table above shows that renewing the registration of your 20-year-old vehicle is now twice as expensive across the board. The fee has increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for made-in-India cars, and from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for made-in-India bikes and scooters. The cost of renewing an imported 20-year-old car’s registration has seen an uptick from Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000, while an imported two-wheeler’s registration renewal cost is up from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000.

The new policy also mandates an increase for three-wheelers (from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000) and for other vehicles, including commercial models (from Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000).
