The third production line at Tapukara will be designed for flexible manufacturing of commuter motorcycles and scooters. Honda is acquiring 73,700 square metres of additional land at the site to support the expansion. The project involves an investment of approximately Rs 1,500 crore and is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs in the region.
The Tapukara facility began operations in July 2011 with an initial capacity of 6 lakh units, which was doubled to 12 lakh units in March 2012. Since 2023, the plant has been introducing automation and new technologies to improve machining processes and production efficiency, taking the current annual capacity to 13 lakh units. This is set to reach 13.4 lakh units by the end of FY2026 through further efficiency improvements.
Tsutsumu Otani, president and CEO of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, said the expansion is aimed at strengthening the company's production ecosystem to enhance resilience and flexibility. He added that the move will help Honda respond more effectively to market demand while continuing to deliver value-driven mobility solutions to customers.
In addition to the Tapukara expansion, Honda is setting up a fourth production line at its Vithalapur plant in Gujarat, which is expected to be operational by 2027. With these projects and other planned expansions, Honda's total annual production capacity in India will increase from the current 62.5 lakh units to approximately 80 lakh units by FY2028.
Honda currently operates four manufacturing plants across India – Manesar in Haryana, Tapukara in Rajasthan, Narsapura in Karnataka, and Vithalapur in Gujarat – with a combined annual capacity of 62.5 lakh units. Since starting operations in India in 2001, the company has produced over 7 crore two-wheelers in the country.
