I want to buy my first car. I currently own a Hero Passion XPro bike. Around 70% of my driving will be on highways, and my budget is Rs. 10 lakh. I have shortlisted the Maruti Dzire VXi, Mahindra XUV 3XO REVX (M), Tata Nexon Smart Plus, and Tata Punch Turbo. Which one would be the most suitable for me?

Go for the Mahindra XUV 3XO. With 70 percent highway usage, you need a car that feels stable at speed, has strong overtaking performance and offers good safety. The 3XO delivers on all three fronts. The turbo petrol engine has enough punch for quick overtakes, the car feels planted on the highway and Mahindra car has a strong safety record. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire VXi is a good car, but it is more suited to city driving and engine performance feels a bit lacking for the highway. The Tata Nexon Smart Plus is a solid option, but the 3XO offers better value and a more engaging driving experience.

I am planning to buy the Tata Tiago EV Creative+ 24 kWh after comparing it with the Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV, and MG Windsor EV. I have to travel around 70 km per day, of which 7-10 km is within the city. What is your review of this? Is it worth buying?

Verified

For a 70km daily commute with only 7-10km of city driving, the Tata Tiago EV Creative+ 24kWh is a sensible and cost-effective choice. The Tiago EV is one of the most affordable EVs on the market, and its 24kWh battery is well suited to your usage pattern. With a daily round trip of 70km, you will be using roughly 30-40% of the battery per day, depending on driving style and AC usage, which means you can comfortably charge at home overnight without range anxiety becoming an issue. The Tiago EV is also compact and easy to manoeuvre, which is useful for the city portion of your commute, and its running costs are significantly lower than petrol or diesel alternatives. Compared to the Punch EV, Nexon EV and MG Windsor, the Tiago EV is the most budget-friendly option in electric cars. The Punch EV offers a higher driving position and more ground clearance, but it comes at a higher price and is not necessary for your usage. The Nexon EV and Windsor EV are larger and more expensive, and their extra space and features are unlikely to justify the additional cost for your daily commute. The only real drawback of the Tiago EV is its relatively small boot and basic interior compared to more expensive EVs, but for a daily commuter car, these are minor compromises. Overall, the Tiago EV Creative+ 24kWh is a practical and financially sound choice for your needs.

I am considering buying my first four-wheeler, and my budget is under Rs. 10 lakh. My requirement is mainly city driving, with occasional visits to villages and a few trips each year. Please suggest a family car or SUV that is practical for family use while also catering to occasional trips and village driving. I have explored the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Renault Kiger, and Renault Kwid, and now I feel confused about which one to buy. Kindly help me with my dilemma.

For your requirements, from your shortlist, the Renault Kiger is the most sensible choice. Your usage is predominantly city driving with occasional village visits and a few trips a year, which means you need a car that is compact and easy to drive in the city, but also robust enough to handle rough roads and occasional bad patches. As you plan to travel with your family too, space is also important, as well as boot volume for luggage. The Kiger strikes that balance very well. It offers a higher ground clearance than hatchbacks like the Wagon R, which makes it more confidence-inspiring on broken village roads, and its compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre and park in the city. It also offers more space than most of the other options in this price range. You also get a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines, and given that you travel with family and do occasional long drives, we recommend the turbo petrol, which has some additional punch, yet can be fuel efficient when driven carefully. The Wagon R, Exter and Punch are a size down on the Kiger and thus won't be as suitable for your family, while the Nexon and Fronx will require you to settle for a low variant in your budget. The Renault Kiger is the best value for money you can get at this price, and alternatively, for a similar price, you can also look at its sister car - the Nissan Magnite.

I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of around 8-9 lakh. I am also currently learning to drive, so ease of driving, visibility, and confidence for a new driver are important considerations for me. At present, my family consists of my wife and me, though my mother occasionally travels with us. My daily commute is around 15-20 km, but that could change significantly if I relocate to a different city in the future. In addition to daily commuting, I intend to use the car for long-distance travel, including trips to my hometown, which is approximately 20 hours away from my current workplace. Therefore, I am looking for a car that offers a good balance of comfort, safety, fuel efficiency, practicality, and long-term ownership experience. I prefer a CNG vehicle to keep running costs low. After my initial research, I have shortlisted the following cars in decreasing order of preference: 1. Hyundai Exter HX4 CNG 2. Tata Punch Pure Plus CNG 3. Hyundai Aura S CNG 4. Tata Nexon Pure CNG. I would appreciate your recommendations on which option would best suit my requirements and whether there are any other vehicles in this budget range that I should consider.

Go for the Hyundai Exter HX4 CNG. It is the best fit for your requirements as a first-time buyer who is still learning to drive. This Hyundai car is compact, easy to manoeuvre and offers excellent visibility, which will help build your confidence behind the wheel. It also has a slightly higher seating position than a sedan, making it easier to judge the car’s dimensions in traffic and while parking. The CNG option keeps running costs low, and Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The only downside is that, while very smooth, it's not particularly powerful. It will feel more than adequate since your use is primarily in the city. The Tata Nexon Pure CNG is a strong alternative, as it gives you a larger car, more performance for your highway trips and better comfort overall. However, the Exter feels more refined and easier to drive in the city. However, the Pure variant is very barebones on features, not even getting a screen-based infotainment system, which doesn't make you feel like you've got your money's worth. Plus, since your mother only occasionally joins you on your trips, the added space in the rear seat won't be a huge regular benefit. Most crucially, however, the larger and more swoopy Nexon isn't as easy to drive as the Exter for a first-time buyer.

My budget is around 14 lakhs, and I am confused between the MG Windsor exclusive, the Tata Nexon Empowered 45 and the Tata Punch Empowered S40. Please Suggest.

Verified
2w

Go for the MG Windsor Exclusive. At Rs 14 lakh, it offers the best ownership experience of the three. The Windsor is a genuinely spacious family car with a comfortable ride, a premium cabin and a strong feature set. It feels like a proper step up from your 2018 Nexon, with a more mature driving experience and a much more spacious rear seat. The Nexon Empowered 45 is a good car, but it is essentially an evolution of what you already own, and the Windsor simply feels like a bigger upgrade for the money. The Punch Empowered S40 is a solid value proposition, but it is a smaller car and does not feel as premium or as spacious as the Windsor. The only real drawback with the Windsor is that MG's service network is not as extensive as Tata's, but it is still a well-supported product in most major cities. Overall, the Windsor Exclusive is the best fit for your budget and your upgrade expectations.
