I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of around 8-9 lakh. I am also currently learning to drive, so ease of driving, visibility, and confidence for a new driver are important considerations for me. At present, my family consists of my wife and me, though my mother occasionally travels with us. My daily commute is around 15-20 km, but that could change significantly if I relocate to a different city in the future. In addition to daily commuting, I intend to use the car for long-distance travel, including trips to my hometown, which is approximately 20 hours away from my current workplace. Therefore, I am looking for a car that offers a good balance of comfort, safety, fuel efficiency, practicality, and long-term ownership experience. I prefer a CNG vehicle to keep running costs low. After my initial research, I have shortlisted the following cars in decreasing order of preference: 1. Hyundai Exter HX4 CNG 2. Tata Punch Pure Plus CNG 3. Hyundai Aura S CNG 4. Tata Nexon Pure CNG. I would appreciate your recommendations on which option would best suit my requirements and whether there are any other vehicles in this budget range that I should consider.

Go for the Hyundai Exter HX4 CNG. It is the best fit for your requirements as a first-time buyer who is still learning to drive. This Hyundai car is compact, easy to manoeuvre and offers excellent visibility, which will help build your confidence behind the wheel. It also has a slightly higher seating position than a sedan, making it easier to judge the car’s dimensions in traffic and while parking. The CNG car option keeps running costs low, and Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The only downside is that, while very smooth, it's not particularly powerful. It will feel more than adequate since your use is primarily in the city. The Tata Nexon Pure CNG is a strong alternative, as it gives you a larger car, more performance for your highway trips and better comfort overall. However, the Exter feels more refined and easier to drive in the city. However, the Pure variant is very barebones on features, not even getting a screen-based infotainment system, which doesn't make you feel like you've got your money's worth. Plus, since your mother only occasionally joins you on your trips, the added space in the rear seat won't be a huge regular benefit. Most crucially, however, the larger and more swoopy Nexon isn't as easy to drive as the Exter for a first-time buyer.

I am considering buying my first four-wheeler, and my budget is under Rs. 10 lakh. My requirement is mainly city driving, with occasional visits to villages and a few trips each year. Please suggest a family car or SUV that is practical for family use while also catering to occasional trips and village driving. I have explored the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Renault Kiger, and Renault Kwid, and now I feel confused about which one to buy. Kindly help me with my dilemma.

For your requirements, from your shortlist, the Renault Kiger is the most sensible choice. Your usage is predominantly city driving with occasional village visits and a few trips a year, which means you need a car that is compact and easy to drive in the city, but also robust enough to handle rough roads and occasional bad patches. As you plan to travel with your family too, space is also important, as well as boot volume for luggage. The Kiger strikes that balance very well. It offers a higher ground clearance than hatchbacks like the Wagon R, which makes it more confidence-inspiring on broken village roads, and its compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre and park in the city. It also offers more space than most of the other options in this price range. You also get a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines, and given that you travel with family and do occasional long drives, we recommend the turbo petrol, which has some additional punch, yet can be fuel efficient when driven carefully. The Wagon R, Exter and Punch are a size down on the Kiger and thus won't be as suitable for your family, while the Nexon and Fronx will require you to settle for a low variant in your budget. The Renault Kiger is the best value for money you can get at this price, and alternatively, for a similar price, you can also look at its sister car - the Nissan Magnite.

Hi, need a car on urgent basis. Monthly drive of 1800-2000 km 70% Highway and 30%city. Budget of 10 -12 lakh intially considering Exter CNG but after test drive not sure about it. Also looking for used cars as there is lot uncertainty regarding fuel in recent times. Have. Selected one nexon xz 2021 model at 6 lakh price. Should I go with nexon or any other good option for new car in same budget...do not want actually big cars due to parking issues

7w

Hi, my monthly commute will touch around 1800-2000km. Mostly highway running 70-80 %. I am considering Nexon used car 50k running 2021 XZ model @ 6 lakh. But I am confused as it right choice for me or 2021 model will be good option as it is not E20 complaints . Or should I go for new car also thinking of New exter CNg or Maruti fronx

4w

I want an SUV-styled CNG car and am confused between the Nexon CNG and Exter CNG. I have taken a test drive of both. The Exter felt easy to drive, had smooth gear shifts, was silent, and I loved its driveability. The Nexon's gear shift felt a bit notchy and not as easy for city driving, but I loved its suspension, comfort, and looks. I'm buying the car for high-kilometre usage. I have an Aura CNG, which I've driven for 2 lakh km and it is still in A1 condition. I'm expecting the Exter CNG to be the same. I don't have much experience with the Nexon. I have concerns about the Nexon's long-term reliability for 3 lakh km over the next 5 to 6 years, as well as the service experience since there is only one dealership and service centre in my city, Bareilly, which has a population of over 13 lakh. My priorities are comfort, easy maintenance, long-term reliability, and no unexpected maintenance. Can the new Nexon deliver all this? Or should I stick to my safe option, the Exter?

Verified

Stick with the Exter CNG, you liked its easy drive, light clutch and smooth shifts - that matters every single day in traffic. You also already have a good experience with Hyundai’s CNG with your Aura and so you can expect much the same experience with the Hyundai and keeping it healthy to 3 lakh km is realistic without surprises. The Nexon CNG is tempting for comfort and looks and yes the ride is better too, but Tata Motor's dealer network quality varies a lot from city to city and with your plan of keeping it for quite a few years and clocking 3 lakh kms you will need a good proven dealer support which may not be the case with the Tata dealer in your area. Go with the Nexon only if you are absolutely confident of the dealer reputation, else stick with the Exter.
