Hello Autocar, I am looking for a vehicle primarily for urban use, with occasional long-distance travel. My priorities include fuel efficiency, an engaging driving experience, ample space for five occupants, and a sufficient boot capacity. My budget is between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 16 lakh. I am currently considering the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza and the Skoda Kushaq. I would appreciate your expert recommendation.

Go for the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI. It is the better fit for your requirements. The Kushaq is one of the most engaging cars to drive in this price range, with a strong turbo petrol engine and a well-sorted chassis that makes both city driving and highway runs enjoyable. It is also genuinely spacious for five occupants and has a decent boot, which makes it a practical family car. The Brezza is a very sensible choice with excellent reliability and low running costs. It also now comes with a turbo petrol, but it is not as engaging to drive and does not feel as premium inside. The Kushaq strikes a better balance for your needs. The only caveat is that Skoda's service network is not as extensive as Maruti's.

I'm considering buying a second family car. My priorities are a comfortable 5-seater, high ground clearance and a smooth driving experience, with a budget of under 10 lakh. Which is the better choice among the Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Skoda Kushaq?

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. It is the most sensible choice for a second family car under Rs 10 lakh. It offers a comfortable 5-seat layout, good ground clearance and a smooth, fuss-free driving experience. The naturally aspirated petrol engine of this Maruti Suzuki car is refined and easy to live with. Plus, Maruti’s service network and low running costs make it a very easy car to own long-term. The rear seat is comfortable for family use, and the ride quality is well-suited to bad Indian city roads. The Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon are both good cars, but the Sonet’s rear seat is spacious, and the Nexon’s would also feel tight for a family of five. The Skoda Kushaq is spacious but is a more driver-focused car, and would go well above the Rs 10 lakh mark for even the base version. The Brezza is not the most exciting car in the segment, and there is an updated one arriving in just a few weeks.

I am planning to buy an automatic car under Rs. 15 lakh as I am a first-time buyer. My usage will mostly be city driving, with occasional highway trips, and I expect to drive around 750 km per month on average. My shortlist includes the Skoda Kushaq Classic, Skoda Kylaq Signature, Mahindra XUV 3XO AX5, Hyundai Venue HX6 DCT, and Maruti Brezza ZXi AT.

Pick the Skoda Kylaq. For mostly city runs, it is the easiest to live with, thanks to its compact dimensions and smooth auto gearbox and for the few highway runs you will find it also cruises calmly and feels secure at typical highway speeds. Fuel efficiency is not class leading, expect 8-9kpl in the city and about 14kpl on highway runs but with your 750 km a month running this will not pinch you. As an option you can also consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, it too has a smooth gearbox and its city ride is nice and plush, but wait for just a month as an update is right around the corner.

I am driving 2018 Ford Ecosport diesel. I live in faridabad. My daily running is 100km. 10km rough rural patch and 90km highway. My budget is 12 lakh. I mostly travel alone and doesnt require boot space. I am looking for a car for next 10 years. Relaibility is important as my I have less holidays. I am not after fancy features like sunroof and digital cluster. I am confused between Brezza CNG, Brezza petrol, Skoda Kushaq petrol, Sonet petrol and Taisor CNG. Please suggest.

For your needs, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG is a good fit. However, a facelift of the Brezza is expected later this year, and spy shots suggest it may get an underbody CNG tank like the Dzire. As boot space and new features are not priorities for you, you could go for the current Brezza, but also consider the Fronx CNG or its Toyota counterpart, the Taisor CNG. All three offer good ride quality and sufficient ground clearance to tackle rural roads, while remaining stable and comfortable on the highway. Being Marutis, reliability is also very good. Before making a decision, do take a test drive of all three. In the case of the Taisor and Fronx, visit both showrooms to see who can offer you the better deal, as under the skin they are essentially the same car.

I have been driving a Honda Jazz Automatic for the last seven years. I am 6 feet tall and now want to buy a new compact SUV such as the Honda Elevate, Hyundai Creta, Skoda Kushaq, Grand Vitara, Brezza, or Taigun. Please advise which of these offers the best driver legroom so my knees are not strained. I am a retired 69-year-old.

The Honda Elevate would be a great upgrade based on your requirements. It has a spacious pedal box and a wide range of adjustment for the driver’s seat, which makes it comfortable even for taller drivers. It will also feel familiar, as it uses a CVT transmission similar to the Jazz you are used to driving. The engine and gearbox combination is smooth, making the Elevate easy and stress-free to drive. This Honda car also offers a comfortable ride quality, good cabin space and a large boot, making it a well-rounded package. In the case of the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, their updates are expected soon. Also, while their turbo petrol engines are punchy, they are not as smooth in everyday driving as the Elevate’s naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT.The Hyundai Creta CVT would have been a good option too, but its centre console tends to intrude and can brush against the left knee, especially if you are a tall driver.
