The Hyundai i20 is the one that fits your brief best. Given your city-heavy use, we recommend an automatic, so look at an i20 with the 1.2 petrol and CVT (Hyundai calls it IVT), which feels very smooth in slow traffic. While it's tempting to go for the more powerful 1.0 turbo-petrol, its DCT gearbox is not as smooth as the CVT at low speeds, hence we don't recommend it. Also, while the i20 1.2 IVT Asta (O) could go out of your budget, we would recommend you to stretch it, as that will get you the Bose sound system, which sounds excellent. Hyundai resale is also strong in Mumbai, which meets your first priority. The Honda Amaze is easy to own and has good resale value too. It's reliable, good on maintenance, fuel efficient, fun to drive and spacious. But the interiors and music system are nothing to write home about. Since the NVH level of your current Honda Amaze is something you are not happy with, we would not recommend the new Amaze, as NVH levels are more or less the same. Wind, road and engine noise do filter through into the cabin at medium and high speeds. Thus, opt for the Hyundai i20 Asta CVT instead, as you would find it a bit quieter. The CVT (Hyundai’s IVT) is also smooth enough when driven at typical city speeds, and in slow city traffic, the i20’s IVT creeps smoothly and keeps revs down, which reduces the “drone” you likely hear. The one thing you give up is luggage space: the i20 has 311 litres versus the Amaze’s 420 litres, but if the boot is not something you use often, this should not be a large concern.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso AGS, which has an AMT thought convenient, doesn’t offer a smooth driving experience because of the way AMTs work - their main weakness is that annoying pause in between gear shifts, which feels quite jerky and causes ‘head nod’, a term that is synonymous with AMTs.Upgrading to a proper AT leaves you with very few options; some of the ATs are diesels, and the only mid-size SUV petrol AT is the Tata Sierra. Your option of getting a city-centric car, keeping the Taigun for highway driving, and upgrading it later makes the most sense.The Honda Amaze, with its CVT transmission, makes the most sense as a city car. It is smooth and comfortable, taking the stress out of city driving, whilst the manual 1.0 Taigun is a solid highway car. The Taigun is due for a facelift around February–March 2026, and other new midsize SUVs, including an all-new Creta, are expected around 2027. So yes, hang on to your Volkswagen Taigun and pick up an Amaze for your city chores.
