Renault Kwid impresses buyers

Dealers say the long waiting period could be the Kwid’s Achilles heel.

The Kwid marks Renault’s entry into the popular and hotly contested entry-level hatchback segment. Unlike its peers, the Kwid is a unique package – an SUV-like design coupled with a 180mm ground clearance. Renault has clearly paid attention to detail. The fit and finish is good, and the top trims come equipped with a first-in-segment touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. It is also bigger and more spacious than its direct rivals, the Hyundai Eon and the Maruti Alto 800. Clearly, it’s a budget car that delivers a lot, and unsurprisingly, it has received 50,000 bookings since its launch on September 24.

The Renault dealers that we spoke to across major cities said that the prospective buyers are appreciating the styling, comfortable ride quality and generous cabin space the most. Also, they claim that the top RXT and RXT(O) trims are in higher demand as they are more feature-laden than the base ones. Most of the potential buyers are first-time owners who seek a small car for commuting within the city.

While most buyers are easily impressed by the car, they are put off by the long waiting period. Currently, the Renault Kwid has a waiting period of around four to six months in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata. This is worrying Renault dealers since buyers in this segment typically prefer going for a car that is readily available. They are concerned that sustaining sales momentum could get difficult unless the waiting period reduces. Some buyers are also sceptical about Renault’s after-sales network, which isn’t as wide spread as its rivals. What’s reassuring for buyers is that Renault is working on expanding its dealer network.
