Honda has started work on the next-generation CR-V, which will make its debut internationally in 2017. As per teaser sketches released, the styling cues on the SUV's exterior seem to be borrowed from the latest Honda Civic. The sketch hints at a sharper, more aggressive tail section, with smaller tail-lamps replacing the longer stretch lights that feature on the current car. Besides the styling, the 2017 Honda CR-V will also share its underpinnings with the Civic.

Powering the CR-V will be turbocharged and naturally aspirated petrol and diesel engines with displacements between 1.6 to 2.4 litre. A plug-in hybrid electric powertrain consisting of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor will also be on offer.

Earlier in 2015, Leon Brannan confirmed to our sister publication Autocar UK, that the next-generation CR-V will be a more premium offering, targeting cars like the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Volvo XC60 in some international markets. Besides, it is likely that the new CR-V will be offered as a 7-seater with four-wheel drive as standard.

The CR-V for international markets received a facelift some time ago, while the India model has remained largely unchanged, except for a minor update to the top-trim model last year. This included the addition of features like keyless entry and go and a touchscreen infotainment system.
For now, Honda’s plans for India include the launch of the Hyundai Creta-rivalling BR-V in the coming months, which will be followed by the Honda Accord. The large sedan will be launched as a petrol variant only, with a hybrid expected sometime in the future.
