New Volvo XC90 SUV teased

The next-generation Volvo XC90 has been previewed ahead of its launch in 2014.

The new XC90 is the first production model from Volvo to use the company's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which will underpin future models from the S60 upwards. The platform has been seen for the first time on the Volvo Concept Coupé, which was unveiled this week and is expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month.

The Concept Coupé previews much of Volvo's new design language, including the direction it will take with interiors. The new XC90 is expected to use a digitised dashboard as part of a move away from traditional button-operated interfaces to touchscreens.

These images, taken during a presentation on the firm's new design language hosted by Volvo design chief Thomas Ingenlath, preview the new Volvo front-end design set to be adopted by the XC90 and rolled out across the rest of the range. Continued..

From these images we can see just how adaptable the SPA platform will be for Volvo. Although the front bulkhead of the platform remains fixed, almost every other aspect is flexible to allow Volvo a greater amount of freedom in its design.

The XC90 will be powered by Volvo's new range of 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E petrol and diesel engines. Each will be mated to either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox.

Replacing the ageing XC90 is a priority for Volvo. With the original model now 11 years old, it has become one of the oldest cars still on sale today.

It is likely that a production-ready XC90 will not be seen for some time, but we already know that at least two other Volvo concepts are being readied to provide further direction for the firm's new design aesthetics.
