Mercedes-Benz has teased its upcoming pickup truck concept ahead of its scheduled reveal slated for October 25 in Sweden. The carmaker has already provided a link for users to live stream the concept’s unveiling on its global YouTube channel, where the placeholder image is an outline of the pickup on a paved and wooden background, hinting at the pickup’s different terrain capabilities.
Mercedes' first pickup truck will be built at Spanish and Argentinian plants owned by the Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Speaking at the Paris motor show, Carlos Ghosn, chairman and CEO of the Alliance, said: “The partnership between Daimler and the Alliance has grown and matured. By sharing development and production costs, we have been able to enter new segments and offer our customers more compelling vehicles with the latest technology and features at more competitive prices."
The pickup truck will benefit from this business system, and will be constructed alongside Renault’s Alaskan truck and its Nissan sister model, the NP300 Navara. Despite the shared underpinnings, Mercedes is understood to be giving its version of the pickup truck a distinctive character. It'll also come with its own range of engines and suspension settings.
Earlier spy shots suggest Mercedes’ pickup truck will sit lower and be slightly wider than its Renault and Nissan siblings. Meanwhile, the upswept appearance of the headlights, visible in the outline through the camouflage, stays true to the carmaker’s design language. The Mercedes pickup could get a different interior too.
Mercedes has remained tight-lipped on the model’s specifications, but our sister publication Autocar UK’s sources believe the introduction of a range-topping AMG version is almost inevitable.
The more premium interior and upmarket badge means that the pickup is likely to occupy the upper end of the segment once launched internationally, rivalling the Volkswagen Amarok.
