The fourth model in the Range Rover line-up, a yet-to-be-named seven-seater crossover, has been spotted testing on international roads, wearing a stretched body like the Evoque, along with a mocked up nose and radiator intake.

Expected to be unveiled sometime in 2016, the luxury crossover will be the sister car to the Jaguar F-Pace crossover but will feature a longer wheelbase than the latter, and is likely to get the option of a seven seat layout.

No engine details are available yet but it is expected that the entry-level versions will be powered by turbocharged versions of JLR’s Ingenium petrol and diesel engines, whilst the all-wheel drive variants may get V6 engines.

With the flagship Range Rover being about luxury, the Sport about on-road dynamics, and the Evoque a small SUV for the city, the new vehicle will stretch the brand towards a crossover - a mix between a SUV and estate. The stretched wheelbase of the luxury crossover hints at more space for the second row and luggage and the possibility of a third row of seats.

A version of this new model is also expected become Land Rover’s first electric vehicle (EV), and is expected to use the same powertrain as in the F-Pace EV. The EV model will solely be targeted at high-end metropolitan cities such as New York, Shanghai and Beijing, and will rival the likes of the Tesla Model X.

The new Range Rover will also fit neatly into JLR’s production plans for its Solihull plant. Given that it will be based on the same basic aluminium structure as the F-Pace and the Jaguar XE saloon, the luxury crossover is expected to be built on the same production line.
