    GM reveals Ford EcoBoost-rivalling engine

The new engine will debut in the Opel Adam at the upcoming Geneva motor show.

General Motors has announced that it is working on an all new, all-aluminium, three-cylinder, 1.0-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine. This engine will be from GM’s EcoTec engine range.
The new engine will debut in the Opel Adam at the upcoming Geneva motor show.  It will be available with two power configurations -- 88.7bhp and 113.4bhp. In both states of tune, the motor will put out 16.9kgm from 1800rpm.

Features of this new motor include start/stop, variable valve timing, a counter-rotating balance shaft to reduce vibrations, integrated exhaust manifold within the cylinder head, low-inertia water-cooled turbocharger and a switchable water pump.

Considering the specifications of this motor, it does seem like GM is likely to position it as a competitor to Ford's award-winning EcoBoost motor.
