A diesel powertrain usually emits more particulate matter (PM) than a petrol engine, but that need not be so always, according to Bosch. The global automotive technology and services supplier said that the diesel engine has potential to be a “very clean engine."

Speaking to our sister publication Autocar Professional, Dr Markus Heyn, member, Board of management, Bosch said: “Today in Europe, the diesel engines are a factor 10 better than the gasoline (petrol) engines in the parameter of particulate matter because all of them carry a particulate filter. It might not be so well known but it is the truth of the matter.

Heyn added that the 2020 deadline for India to meet BS-VI norms is feasible, though challenging. While there are solutions available in its global portfolio, Bosch is not looking at importing it all to meet the new norms. Instead it is tapping its India technical centre to come up with “India-specific smart and affordable technologies” to meet these new emission standards.

The company has also said it will invest Rs 1,170 crore in India this year, part of which will go towards developing and manufacturing solutions for BS-VI norms.
